It's pretty comfortable to hold because of the side grips. People with smaller hands find it more akward than those with large hands.grossaffe wrote:It looks really interesting to say the least. Question, though; How does the Darth 64 feel to hold? the right and left hands are so close together it looks a little awkward. also curious about the two 1 and 2 buttons on the back. Is it basically One side with R, other with L, and both with Z?
Yes you are correct about the buttons.
The buttons are like so :
Left 1 : Left N64 left shoulder button
Left 2 : N64 Z button:
Right 1 : Right N64 right shoulder button
Right 2 : N64 Z button

Yeah, I would probably find that one a bit awkward to control with my little hands.hailrazer wrote:It's pretty comfortable to hold because of the side grips. You are offensive, mothatrucka (apt name BTW), unlike anyone else here. Why don't you leave this community-spirited site and post on Engadget instead, where you can discuss about "cake"?mothatrucka wrote: When I get offensive, you'll all screw know it.
hailrazer - Interesting design and nicely done, I can see why you called it what you did, seems apt.

No thanks, I'll leave that to you, you seem to thrive on that kind of attention. Interesting choice of subject, btw. Seems to be a popular topic here as well.bacteria wrote:You are offensive, mothatrucka (apt name BTW), unlike anyone else here. And thank you. I'm glad someone I think so poorly of finds me offensive. It's a good feeling.
EDIT: As for apt names, do I hear the crow call the raven black, Germ?

My system is certainly unique and innovative - an unusual project; after all who else makes systems into cartridges and then makes those cartridges work via a universal cart slot??Negative_Creep wrote:Bacteria's portable looks nice imo, and while the button layout made me think eh sorta (sorry but it doesnt look comfortable), it's pretty innovative and nice
The reasons the system is comfortable are:
* The buttons and d-pad are in exactly the right place to use so consequently feel nice. Made to requirements!
* When I pick up the case, my fingers are already in the right places, naturally. This means no cramping.
* The system is perfectly balanced at the middle of the system so rests flat on your open fingers without the system trying to lean back and forth as is often the case. Thumbs control the d-pad and A/B/C buttons. Comfortable to use. Large A/B/C buttons are also nice to use, easy to locate.
BTW - forgot to mention before - approx costs to make one of these:
* PSone screen £32 (UK after all)
* ABC buttons and mobo - no cost as daughter boards from plug'n'play I will be using.
* D-pad and board (d-pad from GBA, had some spares, and bits of boards for d-pad, so no cost, although can buy GBA for about £3 so put that in as cost
*Plug'n'plays - cost 50p-£1 each (car boot sales), so say £3 for system and 3 carts made.
* Perspex - sheet of 3mm A4 sized and sheet of 2mm A4 sized needed £6 approx
* Paint, brushes and varnish, about £1
* General glue, and also Hot glue - used 2-3 sticks, about £3
* Plastic sides, under 30p
* 4 x tact switches with caps, about £1
* GB cart slot and surround 50p (car boot sale), if didn't get one would have used cart slot from GBA as above.
* Wiring, solder and desolder braid - about £4
* Beads, about 10p
* 2 x Canon 911 Li-ion batteries, £24 inc VAT. Already had chargers (otherwise about another £22).
Total cost, about £78 ($143). (under £100 when complete other plug'n'play systems).

Yes, I won a couple end of last year for about £26 each (inc postage), won one recently for about £35 which included a PSone (I have about 4!), and controllers and a couple of games. Screen is perfect. Unopened PSone screens tend to go for about £30-£38 these days, getting rarer to find now. I have a few now, so not a problem.Negative_Creep wrote:£32 for a PSone screen is good in UK tbh, just was a bit unsure about the button layout.
Button layout - excellent. One of the benefits of making and designing your own system is that you can make everything where you want it. I tend to make the case, then put something behind it to represent the final thickness, hold the case front and it is obvious where your fingers want to be naturally: that is where you put the buttons. I waited until the A,B,C and D-pad were in place, held system, and put markers for the shoulder buttons in their exact place. Same principle.
