thanks!

i use kyrlon. not fusion, just regular indoor/outdoor stuff. comes in more colors. i like it. it's what i'm using on the handyduo also.

not at all! i'm pretty sure i don't use normal methods at all.

well, i start by super gluing things in. then, i use epoxy putty (i prefer marine epoxy putty, but can't find it anymore so i now use mighty putty as seen on tv). i use more than i should, but i'm comfortable with using that much. after it's dry, i sand using 60 grit paper till it's all level. sometimes, when it's getting close to being level, i switch to my 100 grit sanding sponge. i then use spot putty and sand it with the 100 grit sponge. i usually do a second layer of spot putty and use 220 grit paper. then i start priming. i usually only do 2 or 3 coats of primer. and in between, i look for flaws, and fix them. i sand between coats using my 320 grit sponge. after i'm satisfied, i simply paint it. usually 2 or 3 coats again. no sanding between unless it's a very light "buffing" with my 320 sponge.

oh yeah, and for curved areas, i never use paper. i always use a sponge. i have a 60 grit sponge also.

it's not a perfect method but works really well for me.

there are still flaws, but it's good enough for me right now. lol! if it wasn't a time restricted contest, i'd get it perfect. i just don't have time to do all of my spot fixing.

i suppose i tend to go a bit overboard with my sanding. i start with 150 for rough then move up to 400 then 800 then 1500 grit

after all the plastic work is done when bondoing i stick strickly with 800+ grit paper and almost always wetsand after the first coat or two of bondo are on, i use generic grey primer or cheap paint for the first few coats and continue to wetsand with 800 or 1500 grit paper until the finish is perfect then i put a final layer of paint, LIGHT sanding for color with 2000 grit followed with clearcoat

with gloss black you can see yourself in it

that's the look i go for. never heard it called that before tho... i don't want to see myself when i'm playing. i just want nice and smooth with a very slight textured look.

Shows everyone is different, no set method is therefore definitive. Some like mirrored finish (tried it, didn't like it personally) like Triton with his skillful techniques, some like a slight texture look, like loveablechevy (bondo Queen!), some like an intentionally textured finish (like me). Mine is quite textured but also shiny and glossy - and low maintenance - you will see it in a few hours time...

Everyone has their own preference, all that matters is that you end up with what you like as an individual, after all, 9/10 they are for our own enjoyment and not designed to be sold in a shop!

Yes I prefer the textured (orange peel) look also.

Interesting how different we all are.

Oh and thanks for your instructions. Mine are similar but I use the plastic epoxy hard filler then soft filler, because the bondo spot putty will crack if the case is dropped or torqued. And I couldn't stand a cracked case after all this work.

And I didn't know about the sponges, that will really help with the curved surfaces. Thanks again.

Just finished third game cart - had problems with the first multiple NES game system, got second attempt done. This is a 84-in-1 NES game system, from a console called Arcade Action 2, which looks like a mock N64; had three boards inside, managed to bypass one, removed the game cart slot and soldered the game cart directly to the pins. I then relocated a number of components, capacitors, etc and ended up with a game cart only 15mm longer and 21m taller than a Namco board. Took quite some work! Started off with this:

After a fair bit of desoldering, re-wiring, removing cart slot, wiring cart mobo to it (only one cart for system anyway), trimming; got this:

Built up cart walls, going to hunt for some suitable artwork, finish the cart and then I can start my vids, etc! Been a busy day!

There's a few different types of sponges. There's one style that's the size of a household cleaning sponge, and you can get them with different grits on different sides. They have some flex to them, but they're also wonderful for flat surfaces. Much easier to grab onto than a sheet.

The other's about a 1/4" thick, and is fantastic on a surface with a lot of different curves and such.

Best thing in the world about sanding sponges is you can wash and reuse countless times. So much cheaper than paper.

Man, I am sorry, but that paint job... ick. I know you think it's intentionally textured, but it looks like slopped on half-assed to me. There's quite literally hundreds of ways to get a decent looking texture, why did you go for something so amateur? Same with the carts. It all just looks thrown together. It just doesn't seem up to your usual quality at all.
