screens that don't work - always the case?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

screens that don't work - always the case?

It seems to me that the reason that most LCDs can't work in a portable is because the console uses analog video and the "screens that don't work" use digital exclusively, and it's too difficult to create a converter.

However, does that mean that if the original system used digital to begin with, you could use one of the "screens that don't work" on that?

For example, portables (PSP, DS, GB/A/C/SP, GG, etc) use small LCD screens and are presumably digital. Could that screen then be replaced with a different LCD? If so, how difficult would it be - would it just be soldering wires in the right places?

For example, the LCD on a GameGear is and always has been a blurry piece of crap. Could it be replaced with a newer LCD from the "screens that don't work" list?

And by extention, couldn't handhelds output digital video via S-video or something?

Every portable system has their own requirements for a screen and so is going to be completely incompatible with anything else. It's one of those things that can sound good on paper but fall apart miserable once you actually try it.

There is limited compatibility between LCDs. For handheld game consoles, you need the same interface type, resolution, and dot-clock. So, for example, you could replace the small blurry screen of the Game Gear with a large blurry screen.
