Cutting perspex (video)

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Cutting perspex (video)

Post by bacteria »

I have had some queries from the forum about how I cut perspex for case making in the past, so made a short video.

Three steps:

* Use a CD marker pen and mark out guidelines to cut against.
* Use a thin drill bit to cut close to line.
* Use sanding bit to trim away until line is straight and smooth.

I made a short video:

I also uploaded this to my N64 forum project post too.

Nice video!!
When I first used my dremel, I tried the cutting wheel. The moment it made contact with plastic, the wheel broke into many pieces :P..

Maybe this topic fits better in the "Case Construction forum".. I think it should be stickied there :)

Me too - then after a while I realised you can use a cutting wheel for cutting perspex, and mobos, although they do break fairly easily.

Yes, thinking about it, Case Construction is probably better - feel free to move the topic if you wish!

Moved.
For drilling holes, I've found it best to start with a small 1/16" pilot hole and gradually work your way up to the target size. Otherwise you'll just crack the acrylic or mangle it along with your hands.

I'd strongly suggest this if you are using a drill press:

A step bit works wonders.

Yeah, I use the "gently does it" approach for cutting circles, however I get them very accurate, just with a drill bit and a side-cutter.
