SNES Frameskip (Super Metroid)

Post by Torokun » Thu Apr 24, 2008 1:16 am

Alright...

First of all... I confess that this is first "official" time I am playing Super Metroid from beginning to end. I just got the game from Amazon.com seller and tried it on two different machines.

It runs perfectly on my Retro Duo, which is at my work. (S-Video to my Dell monitor)

I came home and tried it on my original SNES. And I noticed that there is serious frame skipping happening. I tried both S-Video and regular composite video input. It's hooked up with HDTV (CRT) But here is no difference. I hear the sound effects... but I don't see the bullets... Samus would disappear from the screen due to frame skip as well.

Anyone knows why this is happening and how I can go about fixing it?

Maybe the SNES needs a good cleaning?

Hmm, I just recently played through Super Metroid and all I noticed was some lag during big boss scenes but no frame skipping.

Yea, it sounds like your SNES need some much needed cleaning.

Hm...

I recently cleaned it too...

Any specific ideas as to what you are referring to?

Do I need to change the pin connector?

+1 for a good cleaning. There is also a small possibility that the ram in the SNES is getting a little flaky, if the cleaning doesn't help.
The SNES hardware does not frame skip.

I had that as well on my PAL snes. Don't know what it is though. Does it happen when you're on the elevators and you suppossed to like flicker?
It also happens in some games where you get hit and you become invincible for a short time for me.

So far, it doesn't happen on other games. Only Super Metroid. and that Super Metroid plays fine on Retro Duo. So it has to be something with my original SNES...

Two noticeable frame skips are...

1. When Samus shoots her blaster, you don't see the trace of the blaster. Just explosions at where the hit.

2. When Samus is running and stuff, she disappears.
