Would a Tin Case work?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Would a Tin Case work?

Post by Chibminshiy »

I picked up a tin container at a yard sale for free, the kind that holiday cookies/candy come in.

Its a good size for a Portable, 8ins long and 2in deep.

What I want to know is if it is a good ideal to put a Sega or SNES in this case?

I was worried about heating and the case getting hot.
Is there something I could line the case with to prevent it from heating?... Should I install a vent?

I'm using the metal casing off an old CD drive as my case. I'm more worried about a wire touching the metal and shorting out though, so I've sprayed the inside of it with a rubber auto undercoater. It was about $5 a can at the local hardware, and it didn't take very much at all to lay down a nice layer. If you're really worried about heat, you can insulate the case with a layer of plexiglass (lexan, perspex, acrylic, whatever).

The metal is likely to be too thin and bendy, also hard to cut nice holes in. You also have to stop any wires shorting against the metal; also metal would be cold to touch when you wanted to play on the system. Probably not ideal, although if you really want to use it as a case there is no reason not to, with precautions.

Micheals huh? theres one in my area. About how much are the cases you get Adrian?

Bacteria If I were to use this case, what sort of precautions do you recommend exactly? What should I layer the case with?

Tibia, thanks for the suggestion :) I'm awaiting Bacterias responce (he's had a great deal of success with portabalization, ya know) but I will definitely look into the rubber coating spray.

Thanks everyone for your ideals <3

If you are worried about it being flimsy, it can be reinforced with plexi. Your local glass or hardware shop might be willing to let you dig through the scrap pile. It can just be held in with super glue or hot glue. If you end up lining the whole thing with plexi, you wouldn't have to worry about the undercoater or anything, since the plexi would also act as your insulator. I use plexi for so much, since I get it free from the local Ace store's scrap bin.
