Nightwheel's Project: Game Gear OVERHAUL

Post by nightwheel »

While I wait on the namco

I'm going to rebuild and overhaul my Game Gear. Right now, it won't power up. So I got to figure out why it won't power up. Then, with stuff laying around. Bulid a custom case for it. And do a battery mod.

Here are some pics of my victim, I mean subject:

Open it up, first of all. I doubt the plastic is the problem.

GameGears are odd... I had one that wouldn't power up, I got it to work by leaving it alone for a few days.

Good news, I got to it to power up now :D . But it's working off a wall plug. But the good news is that it works still. There hope for this project yet 8) . But, it's needing a good cart conector cleaning now.

Pic:

List of known small problems that need to be fixed now:

-No sound from speaker. Because of a blown cap. (thanks to dragonhead for the diagnosis and for finding me a "How To" to fix it)

-Jiggly power plug in

-Games can be glitchy. Easly fixable by cleaning

Lets hope I don't find anymore problems to fix.

EDIT: Since I got it working somewhat, I'm going to rename the thread

Good, I am all for recycling and bringing back "dead" systems from the brink, it is sad when people just bin gadgets when they can be made to work again. I used to do this, before I was able to "experiment". Go for it!

Well this one is way closer to the brink than than you iPaq could ever been. But it's fixable.

Now I'm wondering, what kind of case should I make. Some thing that reflects the uniqeness of the game gear

Let's not get into "mine was more dead than yours" :D Each project has its own required work.

Anyway, why not keep the front of the case as it originally was, but hack apart the rear of the case, keeping the sides, and making the back extended a bit or a flatter back, to fit whatever battery you get inside it? This will keep the original look of the GameGear but also have the ability to be a bit thicker to take your new cell(s).

Well... I'm wanting to do a full Redesign. Thus the Reason part of my topic name is "Game Gear Overhaul".
And when I said when I said: Some thing that reflects the uniqeness of the game gear. I should of said was: Some thing that reflects the tough look of the game gear. Without using the original GG case.

Besides, I've got some plans for the GG case. The namco need it!

Nice design, Personally, i'd love to see you make it look like a GBO, it would be so different and odd.

Well for starters, the screen ribbon cable is soldered directly to the mobo. And the ribbon cabe is roughly a inch and half long. I could if I wanted to however extend the screen ribbon cable leads with some IED cable or what ever it called. But I'm not that confident in my soldering abiltys just yet.

As for the reason I came up with that design. Is because I wanted to be confortable for me to hold. Thats why im going to use Dreamcast Controller as part of my case. And I still want people recognize it as a sega system. Which is another reason why I'm going to use a Dreamcast controller as part of my design.

With some work, you might actually fit the entire thing into a Dreamcast controller.

That would be awesome too, or work on a dreamcast controller to make it slightly wider.

Well, if i do that. Won't it would look like a DCp?

Also I need a small part and i wondering if anyone has it. A 6.3v 47µF CAPACITOR. They don't sell a 47µF CAPACITOR with that low of a voltage at Radio Shack. So does anyone have one laying around that they would be will to give to me? I need that part to fix my GG audio.

Finally, A level physics comes in handy.
