Anything petroleum based will more than likely dissolve or ruin plastic.
Generally, Goo Gone is safe for most things. It's based off citric acid (oranges), so it won't eat away plastic like kerosene will. It's pretty cheap; even the small bottle will last you a while. The problem is that it leaves an oily film behind, so if this is a game console it's best to take the affected plastic parts off the unit and wash them in the sink in lukewarm water with some dish soap. (It will cut the grease without melting the plastic.)
Rubbing alcohol takes more care to use but it shouldn't hurt anything but printing ink on boxes. It will also remove Sharpie, for those Salvation Army finds. It will also affect the red ink on NES cartridge doors, just so you know.
If the goo is on solid bare metal, feel free to use gasoline or paint thinner (in a well ventilated area or outside, obviously). That stuff will remove anything.
