Ive done martial arts my whole life and i just thought it would be fun to talk about. Chuck Lidell is my hero. Share and play nice, I seem to remember a flame war a very long time ago over matrial arts...

Really? I thought it was a very cultured debate. Pretty rare on the interwebz!
Anyways, I've done some MMA; went to a few classes over the summer. It was fun and very practical, but it's more common sense stuff than anything; to a martial artist. I'm a 1st Degree Blackbelt in Taekwondo and have studied nunchaku and HapKiDo extensively, and MMA just kinda throws it all on the ground. I would have become a regular practitioner, but after I got my blackbelt, my interest in the martial arts diminished. I was off of it for about 6 months, and after a while, I wanted to go back, but that's when I started playing tennis, which I think, is a bigger challenge for me, not to mention there's a lot of scholarship money involved.

I havent done MMA, But I did karate for about 12 years. And I stopped just last summer because I was beginning to lose intrest and I didnt have enough time for it with school, marching band/winter drumline, track, and a job..
But I am a 2nd Degree black belt in tae kwon do. And once I got my 2nd degree I began taking classes for both combat hapkido and jujitsu.
For those of you who know about the ICHF, I got to train with master Pellegrini himself He is actually a pretty funny guy.

That's ridiculous. Of course it's a martial art. Are you perhaps getting it mixed up with Tang Soo Do, which is a flashy, sport "martial" art?SavageLych wrote:Eh I personally dont count tae kwon do as a martial art... The moves are to flashy for me personally...
I really hate it when people criticize different styles. Though TKD was my first, I've since broadened my approach to fighting, learning multiple styles. I like Bruce Lee's philosophy of "the style of no style". You learn as much as you can, utilize what works for you, and shape a fighting style that you can make your own and is completely adaptable.
Bruce Lee wrote:“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.â€

I would still count it as a martial art, just not a practical martial art.SavageLych wrote:Eh I personally dont count tae kwon do as a martial art... The moves are to flashy for me personally...
Your on! It might be a few years before my parents would let me go to MGC, seeing as it is on the other side of the countryCTFan wrote:And schmellyfart, if you ever go to MGC, we should totally spar! I'm always up for a good match.

Well I guess what i ment was Ive never seen a real TKD person that can do anything but kick to my head 5 times, then afterwards a swift punch to the chest and they realize there kicks arnt so good against other forms... even my dad, who has been doing martial arts for 20 years has never met anyone who fights TKD and can use it effectivly. Now Kung Fu is a completley different story, they practice in the same building as we do, and its very hard to get used to the different ways of striking and blocking they use. I personally prefer more practical punches and kicks, none of the swoopy stuff, because when ur doing a spinning kick the other person can move around you and then take advantage of your back being turend...

Psh. No one actually uses spinning kicks in combat. If they do, they're mentally retarted, in all seriousness. TKD has some ridiculously powerful, well-grounded kicks that'll knock anyone out flat. And your dad must be sparring some white belt or something, because even if you were to be hit by, say, a flashy spinning heel kick, they've still got enough bite to do SOME damage. If they were well-executed roundhosue or side-kicks, there's no reason your dad shouldn't have severe brain damage, by all sensible estimations!SavageLych wrote:Well I guess what i ment was Ive never seen a real TKD person that can do anything but kick to my head 5 times, then afterwards a swift punch to the chest and they realize there kicks arnt so good against other forms... even my dad, who has been doing martial arts for 20 years has never met anyone who fights TKD and can use it effectivly. And again, take a close look at TKD and you'll find it's got plenty of solid kicks, punches, throws, etc. In fact, at my school, that's all it was. We learned spinning kicks as a distraction after we got our blackbelts, simply because they looked cool.

I love MMA. I've been practicing for it for a little over two years, and I am a big UFC fan. (was a pride fan, but ufc swallowed it) I want to do it when I get older. You have to be 18, of course, but I have still done submission grappling competitions. http://youtube.com/watch?v=mICy9uU33ME
That is me. So, excuse me if this was unclear, but do you practice martial arts? Also, CTfan gets a free slap in the face for quoting bruce lee. <_<

Dude, despite hard work, it is fun. It is cool to know it, but it is fun to learn it. You also have to work like crazy, and you will sweat, and you will get tired, and you will have to keep going, but you will not mind. I mean, there is no state of "Knowing" martial arts. You always get better, which is why I think it is stupid to have a rank of "master." You will be good before you know it.

I am a blue belt in Combat Hapkido and I love it. I love every aspect of it, the striking, the ground survival, pressure points, weapon disarming, and the locks. I am also in Black Belt club of America and do many advanced training classes. Personally i am very defensive because if someone is attacking you they are leaving some small hole in their defenses that i will take advantage of.
Its nice to know that there are other Martial Artists here at benheck.

sliding side kick a person whos good at it can put some SERIOUS power into one of those. and if you met my friend richard you wouldnt think that tkd is flashy and useless, he is a third degree blackbelt and he is GOOD, ive seen him break 5 2" thick concrete slabs at once and i think 4 blocks of solid ice at once too! and ya some of the stuff is flashy, like crescent-spin-crescent, seeing someone combo 4 or 5 of those in a row is very cool tho!TKD has some ridiculously powerful, well-grounded kicks that'll knock anyone out flat.
