I'm thinking about making a Atari 2600 and I wanted an opinion about the paddle or wheel thing that some games use.
My idea was insted of using a knob, why not use a slider? kinda like the GBA SP's volume adjuster thingy.

that prolly wouldnt work too well. the knob has a unique 360 degree spin that uses a more accurate potentiometer.
those slide potentiometers dont work well in video games. but go ahead and try it.

Where in the hell did you hear something like that? All that you really need to worry about is that it is a 1Mohm (1 million ohms) potentiometer, and you're fine. Something like this: http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch ... 33&Site=USRetromaster wrote:that prolly wouldnt work too well. the knob has a unique 360 degree spin that uses a more accurate potentiometer.

Well, this would be pretty simple if you make a belt system. The potentiometer and a freewheeling roller have a belt between them. The belt goes near a slot. A pad of some sort pokes out the slot and is fixed to the belt. As the slider is moved up and down the slot, it moves the belt, which turns the pot.
That's the simplest solution I can think of. (It's also sort of how our old 70s radio works.)

OK peoples, I found my mouser electronics catalog phone book.
I'm looking up sliding pots.
what ohm is required? how much resistance? 1M, right?
