That is most certainly the classiest portable that I've ever seen. You could set that on a coffee table as decoration when you have guests over and they'd be like, "What is this?" And you'd say, "What, this little old thing?" and turn it on and laugh as their heads explode with amazement and awe.

Seriously, freakin' classy.

That's something I've always wanted to do.. Build a laptop computer or console into a wooden coffee table.

To be honest, the wood could do with a nicer finish... Perhaps some stain and varnish and it will look really nice.

Very pretty! Is it nice to hold and to control? A & B look a bit lopped.

You never stain/varnish wood thats this nice it takes away the natural qualities that the wood has. Wood Oil all the way  I could use another coat of oil but ill do that when I get back home.

Yah it has the right weight to it and is nicely balanced. The A/B buttons are a bit loose but it doesn't effect gameplay at all.

I should have some more photos of it on Wen. as I found someone with a camera.

To me it looks unfinished, and one or two of the screws on the back aren't counter sunk and some are.

I still think this is a pretty amazing project. Well done. I know wood is hard to work with.

Yah I think i have to retap that upper left screw so it will sit flush. The photos do not give the finish justice however.

Wood is pretty easy to work with if you know what your doing (i still have my fingers that is :D). I do like to use metal/plastic but I wanted a more retro look with the console.

My camera ran out of batteries before I could take a shot of the controller boards so I will do so in the next update...
LOL maybe you should mod your camera so those batteries last longer!

wicked project, great to see someone continually developing their own ideas as they go and not just to make do!
First project = A portable arcade cabinet... practical? no... Fun? HELL YEAH!

The much delayed update.

I know I said this was complete but I wanted to improve on the design a bit more so heres V1.1.

I refinished the case with a polyurethane coat to help seal the wood and protect it from my sweaty hands while playing it (it looks better to boot). I then fixed the loose buttons by adding some rubber foam. The back screws are also counter sunk into the wood deeper to give it a nice flush look. And the wiring inside has been cleaned up and looks much more professional. Enough jibber jabber pictures here!

Wow, that looks nice! I really like the cart slot too. Very original, putting wood on the original hinge thing.
