Benheck.com 3.0 Prototype

Post by benheck » Mon Jan 22, 2007 2:07 pm

Over a grueling paced weekend with meager rations I did a bunch of work on a new Benheck.com. This is a hacked up Wordpress build with a custom theme. I think I'm doing OK considering Saturday morning I didn't know Jack or Squat about CSS or PHP.

Take a look at:

www.benheck.com/WordPress1

The idea is all the "news items", like the main page of the current site, are blogged in and thus can RSS out, have comments or be archived by type. The makings of and stories are then on static pages as they always have been.

There's a Most Recent Comments thing, and Gannon's doing a bit to show most recent activity on the forum as well.

The sidebar and the content layout is still in progress, but the top header is pretty much what I want. The upper right blank area will either have an ad or a picture of me with some s**t-eater grin. Or both.

Comments? Feature requests? Yes I know the light purple (or light urple) sucks, it's just a temp.

Gannon - is there any way to combine the users of the forums with the Users table that Wordpress uses for comments?

Ooooohhh... shiny! 8)

Will all of the existing build logs be "ported" to the WordPress system, or will you make the HTML pages look the part?

If you have a bunch of pictures you'd want to show, I found a PHP system called Gallery that's pretty good. I've got it installed on my Apache box, but not on the server yet. It allows for commenting, organization, and all that good stuff.

That Wordpress hack looks great! My question is, how well will that hanging "tab" with the date on it affect forum viewing? (Or will it be a seperate frames page?)

Yes, once I make it "the new site" the latest stories will be up, but in the background I'll put everything I can possibly find into the archives. I think it could go back to November of 2000. This will be a lot better than me manually making "archive pages" like a caveman. Then people can find old projects and even comment on them!

If the forums need updating can't Gannon do that now since he has all the admin stuff he needs?

Hmm. I like it. Except the colors. Which you already said are temporary. I've never really been a fan of pastels. But that's just me.

Overall, it's very nice. The best part is doing away with frames.

I think they want a bunch of forum skins or something. As far as I know we're running phpbb 2.0.19, and 3 isn't out of beta yet so we're pretty much running the latest version.

Yes, gannon can update the forums if he wants to, but if you want the new copy in another directory you'd need to give him access to it.

It's cool, except I never liked premade CMSs. I'm building my own. :p

I guess that is why my site is taking so long for v4 to come up.

Looks great! although the title bar is a little short so for high res. screens it repeats...not a big issue but thought i should let you know.

Those light purple headers are NOT staying, I just threw them in.

The color scheme always has to be some sort of blue, has been for years.

Any suggestions for the gray sidebar? I picked gray cuz it's neutral, but I'd like to spruce it up if possible.

The gray looks fine but if u want it to look better maybe a light blue background with a border of some description?

just chucking ideas out there (in the form of incoherent sentences!).
