Polarized or Non-Polarized?

Post by HK-47 »

The caps that attach to the controller port. Are they polarized and if so which side is + and which side is - ? All I know is that the caps in the 2600 schematic are polarized...

no, they aren't polarized. If they were, it would have a + on the symbol.

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

Hmmm... I thought the ones that looked like this --|(-- were polarized... Well anyway thanks for the info.

Nope, that just means it's a capacitor :)

it's the same thing, but it has a little + on one side (the curved one, I believe) trust me, I just got out of an electronics class (got an A+, thanks to my 2600 :) )

I thought -|]- was a non polarized cap, but it dosn't matter... Cool that your atari got you an A+. Anyway thanks for the input.

Symbols:
-||- is supposed to be a non-polar capacitor
-|]- and -|(- are both supposed to be polar (+ on the right as shown here, even if not marked with a "+")

BUT lots of people use them wrong, using the second and third versions without a "+" as non-polar. This is of course confusing - one possible way to tell what is what (if you can't tell from the capacitance value and circuit context) is: if on one drawing the same symbol is used for all caps, sometimes with "+" markings and sometimes without, if the creator didn't make a mistake, the ones without the "+" signs will all be non-polar.

Oops!, I got the polarity wrong, the two symbols:
-|]- and -|(-
are positive on the LEFT!

sorry...
