The ever-elusive Wii browser

Post by NES_fanatic » Tue Nov 21, 2006 11:55 am

When do we get to download it? Lots of places on the internets say that it became available on 11-19 with the Wii, but it's not available on the shopping channel. Instead, I'm told that it'll just pop up "in the near future."

Does anyone have some kind of solid date for when we can get this thing?

On the Nintendo forums, its been stated that there is no exact ETA. It coudl be as soon as a week, or as long as a month or more. I got the impression that there were some last minute bugs they wanted to squash.

Thats good, its best they perfect the software instead of releasing it and it being very buggy.

Maybe by "Free until July 2007" they really meant "Your not getting it until July 2007!"

That would suck. I too really want it... I'm getting tired of Wii Sports...

Why do you need a browser on your game console when you have a browser on a computer? 480p over Composite wil only get you so far. Reading text on my 640x480 PC-TV box is a strain on the eyes after a while, so is browsing the web on the Wii any better? Or the PS2/PS3/Xbox/Xbox 360 for that matter?

No, but I'm sure Flash cartoons and games and YouTube will be much better on an actual TV.

Admittedly, yes. Flash cartoons look amazing on a real TV. They almost look broadcast quality, provided the flash animator didn't suck. (In fact I think they animated "Harvey Birdman: Attourney at Law" in Flash.) HOWever... you will only get the full effect if you run the video full screen, either with an independent browser window or the standalone Flash player application. (I wish I had the version that comes with Flash 8... mine's from Flash 6. :()

Videos on YouTube still look blocky as ever, just the blocks are bigger and more noticeable.

What kind of "simple things" are we talking about? You can get a lot of news from the TV, and there's always The Weather Channel...

Well, for me it's quite nice because I don't have a computer in my room or a laptop so I could surf the web in my bed, and then play some Zelda or something....It's just a nice little addition to an already great system, IMHO ;).
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

That's probably the main reason for a browser on a game console. Most people don't have a computer in their rooms. I know I don't. :(

Faq or walkthrough on the Wii browser (video 2)
PC Engine/SNES/PS2 game (video 5)

Just one example. Ive had an old pc box hooked to my hdtv in the living room for a while, just to mess around with. I used it for pretty much the same thing.
