Controller Switch troubles

Post by Kurt_ » Wed Oct 18, 2006 7:35 pm

Well I hooked up the switch on my snes to switch between the onboard controller and a normal one.

It's a simple switch. One wire goes to +5 controller on the board (pin 1) and one goes to that pin on the controller port or onboard controller.

The onboard one works fine. However, when you switch to the controller, it acts as if every button is held down. (Or something like that, in Starfox, it at least leans right, fires a bomb, and boosts, and doesn't stop leaning, no matter what is pressed.)

Am I doing something wrong?

Ground was the first thing I tried. I'll check for shorts and such. Could a short cause this?

Well I don't know what the problem was, but through trial and error I found the problem.

The data line, for whatever reason, had to be switched off as well. So the switch switches between both the +5V and the data lines on the controller and onboard controller.

But now all is well.

Code: Select all

( O O O O O O O)
           \/ \/
         To switch To switch
It COULD have also been a messed up controller, but I only have one 3rd party one at the moment. I wasted a KAJILLION early on in the project when I still sucked at soldering and electronics and such. I'm shocked at how much I've improved in one year on one project, both knowledge-wise and skill-wise.

I had the same issue on my SNES controller, but was never really sure how I fixed it. It works, I don't complain.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

As a final note:

The problem was the data line. The connection was poor, and everytime it goes off then on or shorts or something it messes the controller up. After the connector fell off, I soldered the data line to the capacitor on the bottom of the board, and good times were had.
