Designing my own handheld gaming device...

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

Designing my own handheld gaming device...

Post by khaag » Fri Sep 08, 2006 11:02 pm

I'm thinking of making my own handheld gaming device (brand new console, not an existing one). What I want to know is if It is possible to create an embedded system that will run Linux and be able to run Windows EXE files? If anybody knows, please let me know...

Linux support of precompiled Windows executables is nowhere near complete. Sure, there is a program called WINE, but I haven't ever been able to get it running any fancy games. (It can run most of Photoshop 5, almost every component of Office XP, and other big non-game programs.)

If you want an embedded Windows system, look into 98Lite. (<a href="http://www.litepc.com/">litepc.com</a>) If you swap out the shell with the Windows 95 explorer and manually delete extraneous garbage, you can get Windows 98 down under 25 megs. (I've slimmed it down to 19). There's also a version for XP and 2000, called XPlite, but neither of these systems get as small as 98. (I think 2000 can go as small as 200 MB, XP 300 MB. Something like that.) You'll have the capability to run most Windows software with a near-embedded system like this.

For motherboards, go <a href="http://mini-itx.com/store/">here</a>. They make some darn small motherboards, and some come equipped with analog video output.

I don't know how interested in walking around playing games known to be compatible (World of Warcraft). I can say that you should have good compatablity of older games, like those for MS-DOS (use DOSbox) or Windows 95/98 (use WINE). I can't say many games will work under Linux or even WINE. WINE is still in beta, you do have over 70% compatiblity with Windnows binary but it's still hit or miss.

I'm not telling you not to or shooting down the idea, just that that are aspects of it that can be impractible.

Plenty of emulators on Linux, and most are compatable with the rom file types of their Windows counter parts.
