Clogged de-soldering iron

Post by ShockSlayer » Fri Aug 04, 2006 9:37 am

My new desoldering iron is clogged. How can I "un-clog" it? When I squeeze the bulb, it doesn't push any air out. I know its not the bulb.

Unscrew the tip and try to poke it out I guess.

In the first place your supposed to wait 24 hours to bump a topic. In the second place this is supposed to be in the technical questions and answers forum.

What I did was take a small nail the size of the hole, and put the nail in the tip, with the head of the nail pinned onto the table by the desoldering iron. You hold the desoldering iron with one hand, and with the other hand you hold a hammer. Then you hammer (not hard) the desoldering iron until the nail pushes through the pile of crap clogging it.

Now's the fun part:

Get a pair of pliers (not needlenose) and get the nail out. With my nail, it was the same size as the tip, and was rather difficult. a nail with a big head but thinner shaft would be best.

After that it worked flawlessly.

 IDEA!

If your desoldering iron has an unscrewable tip, do what I said, but instead of pliers, unscrew the tip and push it back out from the inside.
