Double cartrage slot-type question

Post by wallydawg »

Let's say I made an NES portable with both the 60-pin and a 72-pin connectors. I'd like to have it so when you put in a famicom cart, it automatically reads from that 60-pin connector; and when you put in an NES cart, it automatically reads from the 72-pin connector, much like how marshall's L64 works with the built in controls and the controller ports. Is such a thing possible, or will I have to resort to putting in a switch (which I'd rather not do, not sure why though heh)?

I'm not worried about power consumption or anything either, if this would even raise the issue. I just used the NES portable for an example; the idea I'm kicking around would be a console. I'm purposely being vauge about it because I'm not even sure if what I want to do is possible.

And what if you have them both in? You only want the 72-pin to be active?

You should be able to just connect both cartridge slots directly to the same place.

You see that the pins have both the same name on both the NES slot and Fami slot? Connect 'em together, then connect them right to the board. It will read from the cartridge that is in. But don't be sticking two carts in at a time, that could probably cause some damage.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

Awesome. I'll look for the cart pinouts now of what I want to accomplish. I might have to tip my hand though.

SMS and GameGear, or SMS and Genesis? For those you need to put some sort of switch on the SMS mode lines, but that can be done by putting a small switch that will pressed by the cart itself.

For the PC Engine/TurboGraphix type stuff, you can just have the cart slots hooked to the same spot with nothing extra, AFAIK.

Those are the only systems with two or more compatible 'just wires' cart adapters that I know of.

Ah, this is what you're talking about:

I can't seem to find any 32x cart pinouts though, and since I was thinking about a double cart slot anyways it would take the same amount of effort to just unplug your 32x adapter and put in the genny game.
As far as I know, the 32X has a Genesis slot on top, and you can plug in regular Genesis games into it and play them without having to remove it. No need for dual slots.

yes you can just plug in the genesis carts into the 32x and it run fine. It might be my imagination, but i but mortal kombat or genesis into the 32x and it seemed to look a little better. If I remeber right the colors seemed a bit uhhh... better in some way. :?
