Ipod charger I made. 56k warning.

Post by myname2 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 4:01 am

Hehe, I got bored, and my friend is driving to texas this week. He didnt want his ipod to die on the trip, but had no way to charge it. So whalla, I made this. I know its been done before, but hey, I thought Id share.

its a 9v wired to a 7805, and has two usb ports wired in parallel. This is the first Ive made, I plan on making more and improving them.
Im also going to add a heatsink to 7805, I think.

And by the way, my N64 is going good, I just took a break for a week or two.

Another Minty Charger, huh. Looks nice, just why two USB? You planning to charge two iPods at the same time?

I think the two usb is kinda cool. Also, you could just take some thermal paste and attach the 7805 to the case, to act as a giant heatsink.

You'd be better off with 6 AAAs wired parallel, because that's still fairly small, but has a far higher capacity. Since he's driving, the more logical choice probably would've been accepting a 12V lighter feed. That's easy enough to modify though.

No, I didn't eat em, lol. I had the can lying around, someone gave it to me. The reason I chose a 9v is because it was 2am and I was trying to make this asap with things I already had.

Like I said, ill make more and better ones.

If you want to just build something like it Lady Ada has kits to her USB charger. The difference is that it's in a Altoids gum case and uses 2 AA rather then a 9v battery, oh and the kit is about $20

Well according to what they say about the one thinkgeek sells, a singel 9v battery will add about 4 hours to the Video iPod's life if it's dead, about 8 hours if it's on a full charge. See here for more details.

I still think the Altoids gum tin that Lady Ada is better then the thinkgeek one.

Yeah I'm going to make somthing similar to this for my portable DVD player, probably with two 6V lantern batteries in series to make 12V, only thing holding me back is the fact that the 12V DC jack on the player is a weird shape and I don't have any like it at the moment, other than the one it came with which i don't want to destroy, I'll try to find the right kind when I go to Rat-shack next.
