Polymorph it!

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

Polymorph it!

Post by minkster »

I stumbled upon something very interesting today online. Ever hear of Polymorph? It's basically little plastic pellets that you melt in warm water to form into a clay like substance and then it drys and forms plastic as hard as nylon. There was already a topic on something similar called Shapelock, but this stuff doesn't melt at hot temperatures! If you read the faq, you can use for candles and stuff. I think I may end up trying this stuff out :) Do you guys think its sufficient for portable usage?

I think it might be ok if you don't leave it in a car or something but I would use it to vacuum form so you could reuse it...

Come to think of it Mink, you posted in that thread too. Nice memory

Edit: Just read the pdf for friendly plastic, and it said it will start to soften when it hits direct sunlight, so yeah I don't think its a good idea to buy for portablizing purposes.

Actually, I know I posted in that thread, only I think this stuff won't melt as compared to Shapelock... I read the faq on the site and it said you can use it to morph things like candle holders and such. So if it can withstand a flame without melting, I thought it would be able to take upon the heat produced from a portable. I may be wrong though. Eh, I guess I had bad memory trying to find the link to that old topic  Thanks kurt

Well it seems it might have a higher softening point. I couldn't find it in the FAQ, but it might be better than the other stuff. Maybe buy a bit and test it out. It says you can saw/rill it.

Q) what tempreture at which it becomes a liquid? for casting or other pouring aplications - Peter Fawdon
A) it becomes mouldable at 62 deg cent - this is the only information we have
That's 144 degress Fahrenheit. That's not so bad actually. I mean, assuming you don't use it for a portable that gets REALLY hot, I don't see some one shouldn't use it. Perhaps even install a small fan into the case. Also, as it says you can spray it with acrylic paint, I'd think that would offer a small amount of protection from sunlight (the issue raised in the other thread).

I would just form it around my cardboard case (Well, i'd slim the card board down a little too, due to money and time, my GCp is bigger than it needs to be :P )

I still think vacuum forming is the ideal solution for a quick case... depending on where you go, 144F might still not be too much of a stretch (if you're in, say, Arizona, where the air temp can be 120F)

Well, where i live it would be fine, i'd just worrry about the 7808 and gamecube's heat. But, if it hasnt set fire to the cardboard, it's probally fine :P

Well, here's an idea:

Make a case, and the get some gloves (not thick, bulky ones, just enough to withstand 60°C) and smear the melted pelelts onto them, then grab your case until it cools.

Who needs gloves? Just burn your flesh off. :D That is a great idea if you want a case customized to your hands.

I suppose, but have fun peeling your hands off once it cools.

No, what you really need is a heater built into the case, so the Polymorph stays heated on it at all times. This way, when someone tries to steal your system, it's got the bastard's fingerprints embedded into it :P
