Whats the least expensive one to make?

Yes it is nice to be able to put your projects INSIDE something isn't it? You know, to hold everything together so it doesn't flop around? Discuss the techniques here!

It depends on how long it will take to get the parts. Also it depends on how skilled you are too. If you get the book it will tell you everything.

Well cheapest case for any portable is frankenmod  my personal fav! (portablesofdoom.org has info on frankenmodding) It is fairly quick, seeing as you just need to cut out button holes and screen hole. You could also buy a project box from somewhere like RadioShack. They're very cheap (about 10 bucks) and are great if you want a clean, simple case.

Seeing as this is your first portable, it's quite ambitious to start with N64. If I were you, I'd start with a simple system like an NES on-a-chip; then again, you do have to portablize the console you love (isn't that why we build portables :?: ) Good luck!

I've always found simplicity is the key. The more problems you have during a build, the more tatty the finished product looks.

At the moment, my Sega Genesis/Mega Drive portable is being built into a surplus 1970's calculator case very similar to the black case in this picture:

The 2.5 inch screen is located in the angled section.

I always prefer to make my own case but I find that I can always make it look more professional by using an "off the shelf" case - if I'm using off the shelf cases, I'll always try and design the portable around the case. Makes it seem like it was a highly-planned professional job!
I've often found if people spend less time worrying about what someone the other side of the world has posted on an internet forum and more time getting laid, they'll be a lot less tense.

go for the N64 if you like it, it's the first on i'm doing. it's challenging but very rewarding (not just a great portable but you learn a ton from making it). i'm making a guide on my site. i guess it's time to replace the old guide i currently have with the new one (it's a lot better than the current one but still under construction).

Sorry if i came off wrong :( I didn't mean that you shouldn't do the N64p as your first portable, only trying to let you know that it will be tough.

Got them at a local auction but they're pretty much the same (apart from a few minor details) as the type Rapid Electronics sell here:

The sloped section is removable on the type Rapid sell.

You can make a case out of anything!!! Yes, you can use cardboard...or you can use the original case the system came in. The possibilities are, literally, endless...it all depends on how far your mind will take you and have heavy your wallet is too.

If you don't want to spend anything...use the original case the system came with.
