Buslink Hard Drive sat on a wall...
Moderator:Moderators
Buslink Hard drive had a great fall.
All the teacher's student's and all of their friends
couldn't put Buslink together again.
So here's the poop: My photo teacher as an external hard drive. A Buslink Fire Wire Hard Drive. Model: MFW26, Serial No: 0Q4A0. Sadly it got droped, hard. The front panel fell/broke off and here's the weird thing. You plug the power for it in...and the "access" and "power" lights turn on. You plug th fire wire cable into it and a compy and it turns off. The compy can't read the drive. Any ideas what we can do to salvage this drive or at least the data on it?

I've often found if people spend less time worrying about what someone the other side of the world has posted on an internet forum and more time getting laid, they'll be a lot less tense.
You may have to have it sent to the manufacture or the a shop to (see if it can be) fixed. The thing is if that hard drive was on and accessing at the time of the drop, chances are that thing is dead. You know scratches in the pallet(s).
I hope you get the thing fixed. If not tell the teacher to run out and buy a 160GB USB hard drive, they're like $30 now.

If you can open the drive, it may just be a standard IDE hard drive in there. (or maybe a laptop drive.)
If so, pull it out and hook it up as an internal drive on another machine. (or in the case of a laptop hard drive, you may need an adapter.) Then you can try running CHKDSK on it to see if it can recover any of the data.
But if that fails, and the information on it is extremely vital, you caneither send it back to the manufacturer, or you can send it off to a data recovery place like DriveSavers. http://www.drivesavers.com/ (They've been around for years, and have a good reputation.)

Wow look at that a $30 100GB hard drive, sure is close enough.
Try www.salescircular.com for all local deals. That's how I found a 512MB Compactflash for $20.

But that's an internal... I think that in a case like this, an external would be best (some schools may not want you to open the computers up)Sparkfist wrote:http://www.salescircular.com/mi/computer/hdiskp.shtml

Ya the HRSB (Halifax Region School Board) won't let anyone but the tech teachers service the PCs and because of this rule were not allowed to take old PCs. The school is required to throw out all the old PCs so I ended up helping my Software applications teacher throw out 30+ 400 mhz PCs they had in storage. Strait to the dumpster.

See that's why you sneak up to the dumpster at night in a black van and dark clothes.Radon199 wrote:Ya the HRSB (Halifax Region School Board) won't let anyone but the tech teachers service the PCs and because of this rule were not allowed to take old PCs.
