Grand Theft Portable is a game being made by myself and the members of the the BenHeck.com forums.
Update 3/13/07
Originally, the game was going to be about driving around a large city (a la GTA), but I don't have near as much time as I used to, and I was pretty much the only one developing anything for it. Even if the world was completely tile-based, it's a lot of work.
So now, the game will be a small collection of mini-games pertaining to portable building. What will they be? You're deciding. See the mini-game thread for ideas.
I am coding the game for the Nintendo 64 now. The target rom size is 8MB but that's a large MAYBE.
You are welcome to contribute ideas/sounds/music/models whatever, just post in the appropriate threads. If you are developing any content, keep in mind this is the N64 you are writing for (low poly counts, low resolution etc).
The rest of this thread contains pictures/content from the PC version I used to be working on. 99% of this won't be used ever again.

Here is Ben:
Playing an Atari:
He's gotta be buff to steal cars and still hold a bunch of MGD...
And so you can see the polygons:

benheckc wrote:Wow this is all pretty interesting. I am flattered someone's making a game about me. Your model is cool, reminds me of Goldeneye. Can I make some suggestions though?
1) If you could make the shoes brown that'd be better - I haven't worn white shoes in probably 15 years. Course artistically they stand out well against the fairly dark model.
2) Not sure where you got the face, could send you an updated one, if you wish.
3) Pants and shirt are fine - 90% of my clothes are dark blue or black.
4) My car is a 1993 Ford Escort Station wagon, red (well, more of a burgendy) Granted I suppose I'll steal other cars too.
5) Have a place I have to drive to to use CNC machines (like real life)
6) I like the idea of having a gun glue instead of gun guns. I actually quite enjoy shooting guns (rural Wisconsin, what can I say?) but yeah, probably don't want that in a game.
7) Have a "Gluestick" icon (ammo) in the corner, that kind of "melts" as the stick is depleted. Perhaps the glue could "catch" people a la Spiderman webs.
Cool If you need voice samples, let me know.
If you want to make this game faithful to me, include the following: (These are things you probably can't guess just by looking at this site)
a) MGD (ok that one you can guess)
b) Playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 on an ancient PS1
c) Making 50 cent bets on everything (amount never changes) Usually stupid stuff like "I bet you 50 cents he dumps her" or "I bet 50 cents Star Wars will open with a $150 million weekend.
d) Watching Law & Order on TNT
e) If you have food in the game, use Dinte Moore beef stew, mashed potatoes, turkey sandwiches, those $2.99 10-inch Tombstone pepperoni pizzas. That's seriously all I eat.
f) Involve my movies if you can. Like in the game I'll still be working on Port Washington.
g) Game must take place in Wisconsin. Use Google Earth and take a look around Madison.
h) In the game I should get emails asking for "complete instructions, in this email, on how to build an N64p"
Alright, well if you need any help or ideas, just email me (real email not the PM) Actually trying to find, say, an Atari 2600 in the local used game stores can be quite the adventure, lots of driving, etc.

Ok, the bulk of the tile munging/loading/saving/rendering is done. I still need to implement some sort of culling (with a 16x16 tilemap, I get 15fps on TNT2)
Update: I've added 2d frustum culling. I get about 70fps now. Much better!
But anyway, here's what it can do:
There's still the 3x3 roadset I'm not using here - I need to add a converter tile!
This looks uncannily like SimCity 2000....

*awe*
Leetness. That's all I have to say about that.
EDIT: wow and you're still getting 56 FPS!
Gonna make an engine demo? (just a rotating scene with a button to toggle between day and night)

Ub3r 1337 man, looks great, keep up the insanely awsome work you've been doing. Also, maybe (since Ben is always making $.50 bets) there could be a betting mini-game. Like, you're in the arcade/bar (well it could be both in one) and you can gain parts, info, or money by winning these miniscule bets... Yeah, that would be pretty kewel...
God Bless Hot Glue
