If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Please Help: Hip Gear problem SNESp almost done
Post
by electromaster64 » Mon Jan 02, 2006 12:34 am
I am finishing up my SNESp and had planned to finish it this week but I broke what I think is the volume pentometer (or whatever it is called) on my Hip Gear. The knob is the one with a bunch of connector pins. Right now my case design is dependent upon me finding a knob that is the same so I can glue the black hipgear knob to it so I can have the 4 knobs on the front of my case. I could always have a fake knob on the front for looks and put a different volume knob somewhere else. Where can I find a replacement and what should I get. Thanks a ton guys.

I am not looking for the actual knob but the electronic component that controlls the volume. I think it is called a pentometer or something.

Do a search online for potentiometers or variable resistors.

You can probobly just go out and get one of those crappy kids mini radios and steal a pentometer out of them eather from the volume wheel or the tuner wheel. Not sure if it would work but hey it's worth a shot.

I have looked at radioshack but I have no idea what to get. Could someone give me a specific item number or something?

well, i believe you would have to find the value of the pot first.

How do I do that? There is nothing written on it and I tried measuring K ohms with my multi-meter but nothing happened.

Just a rough guess it could be either a 5k or 10k ohms pot. Turn your multimeter to the Ohms symbol (upside down U with tails) and try different contacts on the pot and move it around a bit.

if its for volume, get a logarithmic pot, rather than a linear pot. otherwise your knob will act 'strangely'

My multi-meter won't give me a reading off of it. I went to radioshack and all of their pots had 3 connectors the one on my hipgear has 5. I may just finish my SNESp with no sound if I can't find any way to fix it.

Actually, I believe it's a stereo pot. You unfortunately won't find them at the big RS, but you might be able to locate one on Digikey pretty easily.

RS sucks for parts, everyone knows that
...
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

you could replace it with a pot, AND wire a separate pot for the other channel... it would make it annoying to change the volume. lol
