They are needed for the regulator that Ben conveniently forgot to put on the parts list also. I believe it is a low-dropout regulator (9.6v -> 7.2v) so it needs capacitors to run (this is explained in the regulators section of the book).

Yeah I noticed the capcitors that were left out of the parts list. To be honest I couldn't find a 1uf polarized capacitor ANYWHERE, all I can find is a 1uf NON-polarized capacitor. The general consensus is that this wont make a difference, any thoughts?

It will make a difference, because the capacitors are different. Look for an electrolytic cap. You may have to order online.

I did get an electrolytic capacitor. The only difference between the one mentioned int he book and the one I got was that the one in the book was polarized and the one I got was not. Thats what I'm trying to determine if it would make a difference or not.

From the research I've done, and I just checked to make sure, I'm pretty sure all electrolytic capacitors are polarized, so the one you have might have been labled wrong. Can you post a couple pictures of it?

This is the exact one I used. It is part # 272-996 at radioshack. Look it up on radioshack.com it even says in the title"non-polarized". It does NOT have any markings of any kind on the outside, such as a big black stripe or any kind of + or - indications. It is also axial, which means each lead comes out a different end of the capacitor, whereas the polarized capacitor ben shows in his book looks to be radial, meaning both leads come out the same side. This is what made me leary to use it instead, but from what I've heard so far it shouldn't make a difference.
