genesis portable done except paint!

Post by mattb419 » Wed Nov 09, 2005 9:00 pm

Hi all... I got bored tonight, so I've decided to start another portable :) I'm using a revision 3 genesis that I got from Jeffslot... so far, the electronics are done with the exception of re-wiring the controller. I'm holding off on that until I figure out my case design, which is why I'm posting on here (anybody have any cool case ideas?). I'm thinking about keeping the original psone screen case, and adding a spacer between the 2 halves of it so I can squeeze the genesis mobo in there too.

Here's a pic of my progress so far:

well, a quick mockup of my case idea today didn't go as well as planned. I'm going to have to re-wire all of the caps in order to make it fit... with travelling home for Thanksgiving, the est. completetion date gets pushed into December... stay tuned!

Saturn is MONDO hard, that is why. I opened up my friend's to replace a fuse, and WOW-zers! That's a lot of sensitive stuff. I actually broke it by accident. And had to pay him back with my Virtual Boy.....sucker fell for it.

well that, and I don't own a saturn :) and I'm trying to save for a new console, so I don't want to get another old one (I think I have 11-12 as it is :))... might get to work on this some this weekend, gotta get those caps moved!

update: All caps have been re-wired, and I didn't kill it. :D If I can manage a trip to Lowes today, I'll pick up what I need to finish the case. Here's my idea (sorry, I don't have a picture drawn up).

Going to use the front half of the psone case to hold the screen, and keep the original volume and brightness buttons (plus it's a clean look). The genesis board will be back to back with the screen board, with a piece of foam board between them for protection (If I can find something a little thinner that does what I want, I might be able to get it thinner). I'm thinking I'll use 1 inch aluminum to form the side of the case, and clear acrylic to make the back plate. I was going to use the original screen back, but I need a flat surface to build the battery holder on. Then I am going to take a 6 button controller, cut it in half, and put them on the sides of the screen, just above where the speakers are. Then I'll probably be influenced by atkafighter's work, so I'll go get some bondo to fill in the cracks and give it a smooth look, and then paint it.

I'm going to try to get the rough building done this week, minus the bondo and paint.

another update, with a few pictures.

Image
Here is a pic from the front. notice near the speakers where the aluminum side comes straight down. This is where I will put the halves of the controller.

Image
Here is a pic from the side. It's about 1.25 inches thick, doesn't seem too bad to me!

Image
Here's a pic from the back. There are still a few things to do on the back, like add in the player 2 port, and put on the battery holder for the sony camcorder battery.

Things left to do:
Battery holder
External power jack
Controller
Headphone jack placement
fill in all gaps in case
paint (probably blue with white lettering. I gotta remember to pick up my airbrush when I go home for Thanksgiving!)
...almost forgot, A/V outs as well!
