Just so you guys know, if you are looking to build your own pc with custom parts that www.newegg.com is the way to go. All their stuff is fairly cheap and I hear they have a lot of good deals, not to mention fast shipping and very reliable. And here is my pc specs (not custom made):
AMD64 3500+
512MB memory
200GB Hardrive
Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress200 (amazingly the card doesnt suck for being onboard)

I also have my Sony Vaio laptop that I can't remember the specs off the top of my head :P [/i]

Next portable: who knows ;)

use

www.tigerdirect.ca or http://canadacomputers.com/

Both are decent.

compaq SR1710NX- has a (gasp) socket 939 SEMPRON 3400+, 512MB, Radeon X200 integrated, 100GB hard drive, CD-RW/DVD combo drive, Audigy2 ZS, Logitech 5300 5.1 speakers, vareous little things

custom PC from stolen school parts- Sempron 2200+ or some such, 128MB, 20GB, Radeon 7500, cute likkle case, 16x CD-RW drive...no, really :P

Toshiba Libretto 70- has 120MHz Pentium MMX, 32MB, broken integrated mouse, little else, but only the size of a VHS tape!

Mini-Me- has 3.5x5.9 inch motherboard, 400MHz Via Eden, 256MB, 4GB CF card, integrated everything else, running on an retrofitted Apple II power supply!

Lookin to get ahold of some other slim laptop, like a Latitude LS400, or an Armada, or something.

Not bad on the #3

Why do all of you have 3400+ etc. I have a 3000+ and im pretty sure mine is a faster running computer + better, wanna know why? Cause most of you dont have enough ram to run xp + other stuff and a lot of you guys are using integrated videocards which are not top notch. Spend the extra money getting some more decent memory and a decent videocard (Many good ones are coming down in price!)

Yeah well when I have the $600+ I'm going to build a new computer. Key reason besides sending a $100 to upgrade my Gateway is that the Gateway uses RDRAM, a stupid idea by Intel that makes it impossible for me to get ram at DDR prices. Oh and it's a crappy P4 running on a 533MHz FSB.

But really all you need to have Windows run decently is 256MB ram, to make it work well 512MB, to have it perform at it's best (insert laugh) you should have 1GB or more. All that I'm aware of. I just really don't do heavy multi-tasking beyong surfing, listening to music/videos, and maybe buring a DVD all at once. I know if I'm ripping a DVD my chances of still doing something even as simple as surfing is going to suck.

So really I'll wait till... Oh summer I should have the money for my dream computer. I'll call it that as I've only handbuilt one and really that thing sucked any ways.

P.S. If a mod feels this is off the threads disscussion feel free to delete or split the thread here.

AMD 64 3500+
Asus A8N-E
1 Gig ram (matched 512kb sticks)
Some graphics card in the line of an Asus A9600

Ok system, but what makes it cool for what I wanted is this little PCI card I got that essentially is a computer unto itself. It is equivalent to a Celeron 500 so it isn't that fast, but I didn't need it to be. What it does is when the computer boots up, it starts up Win XP, and then I can remote desktop into the main computer which (using a hack) doesn't disable the current XP session running on the main computer. So, my wife and I can both be surfing on the internet at the same time, using the same computer (the AMD processor and RAM are more than adequate to handle 2 people browsing at the same time). Not the most "premium" setup, but it works well for my household.

Just a foreword: most of these machines were aquired through scavenging, dumpster diving or were accumulated over the years.

Good new internet compy:
2.98 ghz Intel Celeron D
160 gig HD
1 gig RAM
56x CD-ROM
48x CD-RW
Floppy drive that will eventually have a blue LED
gigabit ethernet
128MB ATI Radeon 9200
XP Pro SP 1a
42 decibel fan
All parts except the fan and CD drive were bought

Old internet compy:
500 mhz Slot 1 Pentium 3
256 MB PC100 DIMM RAM
40 gig HD
48x CD-RW
Removable drive bay
Netgear GA302T gigabit adapter
Win2k SP4
Everything but the HD was scavenged from school

Linux/tinker compy
Digital PC 3000
400mhz Slot 1 P2
256 MB PC100 RAM
ripoff SoundBlaster 16 PCI
Netgear GA302T Gigabit adapter
OS depends on the HD I install
More scavenged parts!

Old DOS gamer:
266 mhz Penitum
128 MB SIMM RAM
something like a 2 or 4 gig HD
dual floppy drives
Windows 95 with Internet Explorer
Yet again, stuff from the school

Ancient DOS lappy
Zenith TranSport
8086
630k RAM
CGA graphics
DOS 3.1
Used to be a terminal machine at my dad's office. now it dowsn't work very well. :(

Multimedia machine
Compaq Presario S5100NX
2.6 gig Celeron
1 gig RAM
200 gig total HD
16x DVD ROM
48x CD-RW
ATI TV Tuner card
10/100 ethernet
XP Home
Christmas present in 2003

Laptops:

HP Pavillion
700 mhz P3
192 MB RAM
16x DVD-ROM
98, soon to be XP and Suse 9.1
Traded my uncle a Dell Latitude P2 300 and $50 for it. He needed an internet machine on the front desk for special orders, I needed more power than it provided...

Toshiba Tecra
266 mhz P1 MMX
500 meg HD
64 MB RAM
Damn Small Linux 1.5
Corporate throwaway. I replaced the hard drive with an old one I have lying around because I didn't want to erase the data on it.

A couple others that don't work

Apple computers:

Motorola StarMAX 4000
200 mhz 604e
128 MB RAM
10 gig HD
Mac OS 7.6.1
Corporate throwaway, got it in 1998 when they switched the site from Macs to PCs

Macintosh SE/30
16 mhz Motorola 68030
8 MB RAM
80 MB HD with 1 gig external SCSI drive
1.44 MB Superdrive that power-ejects disks (no push button, motors eject floppies. kinda cool.)
9" B&W CRT built in
System 6.0.8
Same deal, but I got this one in 1995. It's fun to go and play the old games I grew up on. *flashback*

various old powerbooks like a couple 1400s and a handful of duos, all corporate throwaways

My dad's computer:
Dell server machine
2.6 gig Pentium 4 (maybe HT, I dunno)
1.5 gig RAM
approximately .5 TB of HD space with external drive connected
Windows XP SP2 *gags*

AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+
3 Gigs Ram
Nvidia geForce 6600GT graphics card
175 GB hard drive
Runs Windows XP 64-bit edition

This thing is a real number cruncher. Me likes it.
