Anyone see a VG Pocket?
Moderator:Moderators
I searched the forums and could not find anything related to this, so thought I'd share.
I was at my local Gamestop looking around and found this:
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=322255
It's made by Pelican and is called the VG Pocket 50. I must admit for the price, I was intrigued!
Doing some more research, came across this thread on Cheap Ass Gamer:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/sho ... ge=1&pp=20
Apparently there are a couple of flavors of the VG Pocket. The one I picked up was from Radio Shack called the VG Pocket Max:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... 2163471&cp
They are on sale now for $40. Unfortunately, I cannot open mine until X-mas to give a report...
For this price, I'm wondering what you creative geniuses could do with this. It's cheap, already portable with a screen. Maybe a NOAC or something like that?
Just wanted to pass this along, I love seening what this community comes up with and what possibilities this could hold.
Thanks!

probably is digital, but if it's noac based there's a good chance of standard video right off the chip, correct?SpongeBuell wrote:if it's anything like the GBA/GBC/GB screen, it's digital... that seems to be pretty common for things like this.
anybody purchased one yet, or seen the screen in action?
I came so close to buying, but I had just laid $200 down on a GP2X...which currently plays about the same games

Here's what info I have:
LCD- 2" TFT 240X180? no manufacturer/part# on it (did a pixel so may be off a little)
CPU- not sure (%$^! black blob but the manufacturer www.jungletac.com specializes in SOC systems)
Memory- 32Mbit 3v flash memory Micronix MX29LV320BTC-90 (have a pdf datasheet if anyone needs it)
Phillips 74HC4053 Triple 2-channel multiplexer/demultiplexer (have datasheet as well)
Jungletac does custom loading of games on a couple models so the A/V or headphone jack may double a dataport (think early MP3 players). Even if it doesn't the chip is flash memory so if you can get write access then.....! Maybe the guys at camerahacking.com could lend us a hand.
That's all I have so far. Hope it helps. My idea it to put this bad boy in an original NES controller.

The Pocket 50 is a little different. There's two crystals going to the Phillips chip and the Micronix is standard 48pin and is completely exposed. By the pics of the pocket max, the memory chip (if not on the other side of the board) is smaller than that.
If Jungletac is doing their own SOC design then it is possible that they have their own approach to NOAC's to better suit their production capabilities. It may also be a Sega Master System SOC but without accessing the flash memory directly it's had to say.
As far as pics, I don't have a digicam right now but will try to pull some stills off my CVS camcorder.
BTW- Any suggestions on safe removal of the black blob?
