What are the odds of this happining?

Post by The Zydeco King » Tue Sep 14, 2004 9:55 am

On the first anniversery of the 911 attacks.
The New York lottery drew 9,1,1 as the winning pick-3 combination in their digit lottery on Sept. 11, 2002

This may be news that is two years old, but most people don't know this happend.

Do a Google search and you will find it's true.

But I say what are the odds of this happinig? Theire has to be some kind of super natural power out there that caused this to happen.

assuming it's not fixed and you're talking about the odds of getting 911 on 9/11, I'd say it's the odds of winning in that game times 365.25 (the .25 being there for the occasional leap year) to one.

Come on now... caused by supernatural power?

The odds for getting the combination of 911 on 9/11 is the same as the odds on any other day. The odds of getting any specific number combination, like 911 for instance, in a pick 3 on any given day is about 1:1000. Hardly supernatural.

Now if 911 would have been drawn Sep 11 in 2002, 2003, and 2004 then that would be something (approx 1:1,000,000,000 - 1 in 1 billion) - that I might claim as supernatural.

And don't forget to count the odds of it happing in New York.

So you are saying the odds are once in 1,000 years this would happen on September 11th. Because don't forget, there is only one try per year.

So that is 1 in 365,250 tries right? So that would mean one in 365,250 years because 9/11 only happens once a year and they only choose numbers once a day. So that means one try per year right?

Does anyone know the science of Statistics? What wold be the true odds? Or has the true odds already been mentioned?

OK just to clear this up I'll tell you how it works...

1. The odds of getting 911 on any day is 1 in 999 (because there is 999 posible numbers to chose from.)
2. The odds of the number being 911 on 9/11 is 1 in 364635 (because 999 * 365 (the days of the year) = 364635) <= This is what Gannon was talking about.
3. Finnaly the odds of it being in New York is 1 in 18231750 (364635 * 50 (I'm from Canada so i dont know how many states there are so I'm guessing 50 :? ))

Any way this means that the chances of the winning number being 911 on 9/11 in New York is 1 in 18231750. :D

Probably not supernatural, the odds of winning in the lottery is up around there too.

True. then multiply that by how many lottery districts there are (50 in the US, minus any states where there is no lottery, if any, plus how ever many there are in the world)

The odds are 1 in 1000. Don't forget: 000 is a valid combination

The number of possible combinations of 3 single digit integers is computed as such: the number of items to choose from in group 1 x the number of items to choose from in group 2 x the number of items to choose from in group 3

10 x 10 x 10 = 1000

There are 1000 possible combinations, you are selecting 1. Odds = 1:1000.

The chances of drawing the combination 911 on September 11, 2002 in the state of New York is 1 in 1000. The number of days in a year and the number of states in the country have nothing to do with it. Just think about it - how could they have anything to do with it? The number of states and all the other days in the year have no influence on that drawing on that day.

Here's another example: Given a coin w/ heads on one side, tails on the other. If you flip the coin and it lands on the ground what are the odds that it will be showing heads up? 1:2 - 50% right? Now do it again. What are the odds of getting heads again? 1:2 - 50% - same odds. The odds of getting heads on one particular flip does not change based on previous results. It doesn't matter how many times you flip it, the odds are always the same. No matter how many times you have heads in a row - there is always a 50/50 chance that you will get heads again.

Ok, so it's not super natural, but it's still very interesting how New Yourk beat the odds on the first try on the first anniversary. Only one try per year and they got it on the first try.
