Basically you want to install Linux, or Windows as make it run there app and port forward to it.

Just need a powerful computer as it uses crap java.

First thing to do is read as much about setting up and maintaining a server as you can, so you know what you're getting into.

You're going to need lots of RAM to run a decent server as well.

Start by hitting these two sites:

The first tells you how much bandwidth your Internet connection has to offer, and the second crunches some numbers for you and spits out a rough estimate of how many players you can host simultaneously.

You also need to know how much memory you have. You can find this out by right-clicking My Computer and selecting Properties on Windows, or selecting "About This Computer" from the Apple menu on OS X. Can I Host a Minecraft Server expects you to enter your RAM in megabytes. XP (and I believe OS X) give you that figure, but if you're running Vista or Win7 it will say "2.00 GB" instead. Just multiply the number of gigs of RAM you have by 1,000 for a close-enough figure, or by 1024 if you want to be picky. Let's say the PC I'll host with has 2 gigs, or 2048 megabytes, of memory.

If you have a better Internet connection than I do you can host a server.

Port forwarding is a little different depending on what router you have. Here's a good site that has guides for most popular models:

The gist of it is you set the server PC to a static internal IP address, then tell the router to send all unsolicited traffic coming in through certain ports to that PC.

Remember it's highly recommended that you don't host the server on the same PC you're playing on. If anything, do it inside a separate virtual machine inside VMWare or VirtualBox. (A separate PC is best, though.)

If your Internet connection is as antiquated as mine, or you're not sure about some of the things involved in setting the server up, you're probably just better off renting from a game host.
