Found a Kawesome amp... unfortunately

Didn't know where else this would go, so I thought I would put it here.
Hey guys.
As you probably know, the 3.5 inch car monitors don't have amps in them and the only way to have audio is to either build an amp or make one.
Many of you know of the popular lm386 amp you can build. It's great in terms of price but sucks at producing any good audio.
There are also a large selection of premade amps, but they cost around 20 to 30 dollars.
After searching for months I've found a small, low cost, low voltage amp that costs less than a bread board.
Although like the other amps it has a problem too, which is....
IT'S IN A HELLO KITTY CASE
What were they thinking when they put a decent amp in a hello kitty case?
Although when I think about it, it does seem kinda cool how you have to kill hello kitty in order to get the amp.
Anyway moving away from the hello kitty side of the item.
It's a pretty small amp.
'
It's also stereo, all it needs is a duel gang pot and it's good to go (looks at shockslayer).
It also producers pretty good sound, which for 5 AUD I wasn't expecting.
All in all it's a pretty decent amp if you can get over the hello kitty side of it.

Re: Found a Kawesome amp... unfortunately
I see that board has a TDA2822 chip. Those seem to be pretty common. I've scavenged them from many old electronics, and used that chip in two portables. (Gonna be a third soon. ) They're really nice little chips, with TONS of gain. With an N64, I had to put 1 MEG (1,000k) resistors on the audio lines to bring the sound down to an acceptable level.
Like you said, if you want stereo, you need a dual gang pot. (These are just pots that adjust two channels at the same time.) You can actually get these chips pretty cheaply online, and just look up the datasheet to know what components to wire it with.
You can get them pretty small if you try:

Re: Found a Kawesome amp... unfortunately
I forgot to look for those chips online.
I only bought it because the only shop that sold them near me, sold it for more than this premade amp.
Somebody needs to facepalm me.

I wasn't criticizing you, it's great for a premade amp. I was just pointing out that the chip can also be bought online.

Re: Found a Kawesome amp... unfortunately
Like Ben Heckendorn says, "Don't build it if you can buy it." Especially if you can buy it premade cheaper than you can buy the components! Assuming you don't have any of the parts on hand and you have to pay for shipping and stuff, there's nothing wrong with killing a kitten to get what you need
Looks like the speakers that come with this thing are just the right size, too, and speakers are usually kinda expensive. Actually, I'm going to derail the thread here - anybody know where I can find some good sounding yet low cost speakers no larger than 45mm in diameter?

These look like PSOne screen-style speakers with just a big plastic case around them. You could probably get them out easily, and they're only $4 shipped.
