I've burned my fingers on two or three occasions; you learn not to touch the hot part. I do get a bit clumsy with the soldering iron if I haven't used one for a while, though.

I haven't burned myself with the iron, but those little spatters of the flux-core solder flux going everywhere hurt.

I think you're doing it wrong. Shorts should be adequate protection from burns unless you're sitting funky. It isn't like hotglue where you can shape it somewhat with your fingers if you need to.
I've burned myself once to the point that it blistered, all the other times were quick touches that were stopped before any damage could take place.

I've managed to drip solder onto my knees when wearing shorts. Also grabbing the iron lower than the grip has happens occasionally. Sometimes even if I pick up a cold iron, my reaction is "DROP IT DROP IT IS'S HOT".
Also, hot glue on the back of fingernails is NOT FUN.

It's just like any tool. The more you use it, the less often you'll make mistakes/injure yourself. Just remember all the times you've smashed your thumb when hammering nails, and you'll see what I mean.

Let me think...I've only burned myself twice in the last 17 years that I've been soldering...both times happed bout that long ago lol....still have the scars tho...one across the back of my right hand, and one on the palm of my left

You can barely make out the left one, but the right one is still pretty visible.

I burned myself a couple of times because I was getting annoyed by everyone in the world....meaning all my friends calling me on my cell and my brother bugging me by asking me repeatedly "What are you doing?"...And then this one time, I had to stop a wound from bleeding....yeah its been explained on the hot glue hurts thread....lol
@Timmeh87---yikes dude what the heck happened....that is you don't telling us
