I think I had my nerdiest moment today. We we're having a group test today and a friend and I were working together on the last problem. (which is always a really hard word problem) I'm in algebra 2 right now so it had synthetic division, factoring, foiling, polynomials, properties of powers, etc, etc. We got really into it because we started to figure it out we each alternated saying something right after the other, pretty much finishing each other's sentences then finally getting an answer. I then checked it on my calculator then said YES! We then instantly high fived.
It was actually pretty epic.
(I don't really have a geek moment that stands out any, nothing epic anyway)
So what's yours?

I'm running a virus scan right now, and I can tell which hard drive (of my four) is being scanned by the sound.

I went to the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota.
Sadly, I forgot to purchase a miniature souvenir ball of twine.

I was out at the pub, talking to this girl I met a couple of times, doing the casual flirty thing;
"I'm in to nerdy stuff," she says, "I can just spend my entire weekend just playing my 360."
I reply; "I'm into nerdy stuff too, I'm into deadspace right now."
"you think I'm nerdy?"

Last week, I decided to not pay attention to my C++ lab (because I know it all already <.<) to calculate how much a solid gold pool cue would weigh. Turns out, it'd be surprisingly close to a regular pool cue.

that sounds unlikely lol, gold has a density of 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter, sugar maple (aka hard rock maple) has a density of .676g/cc. a solid gold cube appx 18" to a side would weigh one tonSquintus wrote:Last week, I decided to not pay attention to my C++ lab (because I know it all already <.<) to calculate how much a solid gold pool cue would weigh. pretty sure the above could be considered one of my geekiest moments

I think we were assuming a heavier original cue. But I gracefully accept my pwning either way.

Actually, that cube would weigh just over 2 tons.Triton wrote:gold has a density of 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter, sugar maple (aka hard rock maple) has a density of .676g/cc. a solid gold cube appx 18" to a side would weigh one ton

Wouldn't a solid gold pool cue be really easy to bend, and wouldn't the end deform after a couple games?

whoops, i had it right the first time, that should be 14-15" not 18"vskid wrote:Actually, that cube would weigh just over 2 tons.Triton wrote:gold has a density of 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter, sugar maple (aka hard rock maple) has a density of .676g/cc. a solid gold cube appx 18" to a side would weigh one ton

Very likely... 24K gold is so soft a necklace would bend its own links from it's own weight.
I had a close to my most geekiest moment. I was at a party with people from my church. I got into talking about what I know about hydroponics and various other sustainable fuel sources and had a small crowd around me surprised at what I knew.
And I hold firm in the belief that I know jack! I've been to school and been taken down several pegs by what other people know compared to me in computers (my best subject).

I calculate that a solid gold Pool Cue stick would be around 25 lbs.Triton wrote:that sounds unlikely lol, gold has a density of 19.32 grams per cubic centimeter, sugar maple (aka hard rock maple) has a density of .676g/cc. a solid gold cube appx 18" to a side would weigh one tonSquintus wrote:Last week, I decided to not pay attention to my C++ lab (because I know it all already <.<) to calculate how much a solid gold pool cue would weigh. (Calculations based on being a cylinder with a tip 13mm in diameter, length of 58", an end 31mm in diameter, and a density of gold at 19.3 g/cc.)

Re: What's your nerdiest/geekiest moment?
I went to Video Games Live with my wife with whom I have recently converted into the ways of the controller. Every few moments she was like,"What game are they playing on the screen?" I was able to manage to answer ever single one. They also had a costume contest at which there were only like 9 people out of 200 that actually dressed up. I turned to my wife and said that we could've come in costume and pwned all these kids! The kid who won was dressed as Link and he was like I dunno, 10?

Just my desk in general.
4 LCDs
1 Laptop
2 Pairs of Sennheiser headphones
1 360
2 specialty Rubik's cubes
1 Linksy's router with a light up fan on it.
I think this is probably the geekiest thing tied to my name.

In the spirit of things nerdy, here is proof for my calculations of the weight of a gold pool cue.
