Roy E. Disney has died (1930 - 2009)

Source: Market Watch
LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Roy Edward Disney, nephew of animation icon Walt Disney and a key force in a shareholder revolt earlier this decade that resulted in changes at the top of the executive ladder for the entertainment giant, died Wednesday after a year-long battle with stomach cancer, the company said. He was 79.

Roy Disney died at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif. He was the one face that connected Disney Co. to its storied past, with his distinctive looks that were reminiscent of his uncle.

His father, Roy O. Disney, was brother to Walt, and the two founded the animation specialist in Burbank, Calif., in 1923. Roy E. Disney was born seven years later, and eventually had a hand in the company for 56 years.

"He was much more than a valued 56-year company veteran -- Roy's true passion and focus were preserving and building upon the amazing legacy of Disney animation that was started by his father and uncle," Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said in a press release.

The younger Disney helped to usher in the Michael Eisner era in 1984, after the studio suffered through years of languish. Under Eisner, then the company's chairman and chief executive, Disney Co. thrived for more than a decade, with Roy Disney's help as chief of its animation department.

The studio produced such animated hits as "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and "The Lion King." Roy Disney served as Eisner's vice chairman from the start of his tenure up until 2003.

After "Lion King," however, the following decade proved rocky for Eisner and the company. Ultimately, Eisner tried to consolidate power by forcing Roy Disney to leave the company's board due to an age requirement. He and business partner Stanley Gold, another board member, then initiated a shareholder revolt that eventually resulted in Eisner's ouster and ushered in Iger.

Roy Disney initially balked at Iger, Eisner's hand-picked successor, but eventually came to accept him as the head of the company once Iger extended an olive branch.

Roy Disney first joined the studios as an assistant film editor in 1953, then produced and directed a number of television and theatrical productions. Disney also was head of Shamrock Holdings with Gold, which specializes in equity and real estate investments.
A great man that will be missed. The last major link to Walt Disney is gone.

I lost my dad who was my best friend and business partner in February to cancer.

Once you lose someone really close to you, you realize the pain that EVERY death in this world causes.

I'm sure he had a lot of loved ones in his life and they will miss him very much.

Well, at least the Disney Channel / kiddie rock division... :\

Their movie studio and Pixar are still pretty awesome. I've never been to their theme parks so I could take 'em or leave 'em.

Agreed...those things really need to be destroyed, followed by a public apology for even making those things the way they are now. It's the only way to restore honor to the Disney name at this point.

Oh, so you're just a troll; never mind me addressing you.

Legitimate Disney is undoubtedly worthwhile. Today's Disney Channel and such do suck, but it's hard to deny that Disney has had some great pieces of work.

All I'm saying is that if we try to feel bad for people we've never even met we'll get ulcers for no legitimate reason.

Hundreds of people die each day in foreign countries and stuff, and I don't see anyone crying a river.

I never knew him or of him, so I don't care. You can, but I'm trying to help you by saying your wasting a bit of your time.

Continue.
