A gaming computer made real cheap. win?

Post by metalcookie » Fri Dec 11, 2009 8:58 pm

Hi all, been a while since i've been on the forums, but it's christmas, I need a new computer, and i got a few questions. i thought to myself,"what better place then to turn to the benheck forums!?!?!?"
well, here's the wishlist on newegg:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Publi ... r=11540545" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A few of the specs:

AMD athlon xp 3 GHZ dual core
Geforce 9800 gt 1gb 256bit graphics card
160gb hard drive SATA
2 gb dual channel kit DDR3 pc 1800 RAM
ASUS M4A77TD AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

Would this computer be able to play the newer games at low or medium settings at a medium - high framerate?

I'd say it would easily do most games, maybe even on high settings.

That would greatly vary depending on the game.

What games do you want to play, and what's your budget?

One of the best ways to gauge game performance is to look up "[cpu/gpu/whatever name here] [game title here]" on YouTube.

Remember to factor in a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium in your final build price. ($100.) You can still get away with running the RC until March 2010.

...What if he doesn't want win7? What if he wants to stick with Xp or vista or who knows what...?

I'll tell you I've had great performance with that CPU and an EVGA 8800GT card with 320 Mb and 2 GB of ram, if I was you I'd upgrade the HD though, it would only be another $30 or so to get 750 GB. That's what i did at least. :D

Hmmm...
I do want a bigger HD, and I've got a friend with a windows xp install CD. I don't feel like switching operating systems right now. It would be nice to try vista though. What do you guys think about vista?

I'd say either stick with XP or jump to 7. Vista isn't worth your trouble, at least not with 7 out and about.

Can you use DDR2 RAM in your motherboard? If you can I'd say go for it. DDR3 isn't worth the jump (not yet at least). Also, upgrade the hard drive, I'm running 160gb and hate it. I can fill it up with a few steam games and my music and videos, way too small. The graphics card is good, I have an 8800GT (same thing practically) and it's pretty phenomenal for everyday gaming. Also, get a DVD burner unless you have one already, trust me.

Yeah I was gonna say get DDR2 ram, expecially with the processor you have, the DDR3 isn't gonna upgrade anything.
Also, get a dvd burner. They're cheap as crap, and worth it when you really need it.

You can get more hard drive for your money, and a DVD burner is less than $10 more than that CD/DVD ROM drive.

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB - $70

Sony Optiarc SATA DVD burner - $27
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827118030" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's probably going to cost you almost $20 to ship that case, so it might be worth it to look at $40-ish cases with free shipping. You might be able to find a nicer one (better cooling, more drive slots, etc) for the same final price. :D

What about overclocking? Could that really help the performance, or just a little bit?

Don't listen to these guys. Vista is way better then Windows XP, as long as you have a good computer (the one you are building). So, I'd try Vista.

But there's no point in going with Vista now that 7 is out. :| That's like buying Windows ME after XP Home was released.
