Downtime should be over with - Now with ReCaptcha!

Hey guys,

As most of you may be aware, we have a ton of bots around here and it sucks a lot. However, most of you are probably not aware that phpBB 3.0.6 came out recently, and that it has a lot more bot restrictions than any previous stock version of phpBB. With that, I'm going to see if I can upgrade it tomorrow morning in my timezone (Spain), which works well for me and most of you will be (or should be) sleeping, around 3:00AM CST.

Any questions, PM me or find me on AIM (same username as I have here, minus the 2 l's at the end). All of this depends on me getting the go-ahead from Ben (sent him an email, hoping he'll get it in time) and Skyler being around to help out if something goes wrong like last time. At least I'll make a backup, bleh.

I don't remember the search function going down before, but once the upgrade is done the search function should work just as it always has. I don't think there is any changes to how searches are done in this upgrade (it's a relatively small upgrade, most people won't notice anything; the registration form will change slightly, though). While the upgrade is in progress, however, nobody will be able to search or browse the forums. That's where timezones and low-traffic periods come in handy, and work well together in this case.

What happened last time was we could still search but it wouldn't find anything before the update. For example search portable and you'd only get a few results. Basically the search history was gone.

Yeah, palmer reminded me of that later on. I don't remember it that well, but we can always re-apply the fix, wasn't too hard once we knew what to do.

And we're back for the most part. Ben's being slow about running some query I gave him, which would take care of the styles, but at least things are functional.

As much as I love the idea of #1, #2 is more factual. As proof, I offer this picture of a monkey on my head, taken when I was in Gibraltar (technically a British territory, but it's tiny and on the Iberian peninsula)

Er, wait. It's a picture of a me sitting on a monkey... I can never remember which of us is which.
