I say backwards compatibility FTW
A truly wise man can entertain a thought without accepting it. A fool cannot withhold past judgments but instead closes his mine to new possibilities. Someone who wants to innovate simply needs to forget what everyone says isn't possible.

What is the big deal with backwards compatibility?

Seriously... At this point who doesn't have a PS2?

Fair enough. Used PS2's are pretty cheap though, right?

For me personally it doesn't matter. I used to think it was a feature I would use, but I've found that when I move on to whatever the latest generation in gaming is I don't really look back. So it isn't anything that I place any importance on anymore.

The thing with BC is that it generally isn't a moneymaker. When you make cutting edge hardware you don't make money selling it (at least initially) so the whole point is to get the hardware into people's hands so they go out and buy the new games which is where the real money is made. Of course there may be a few people who would buy the occasional PS2 game to play on their PS3, but mostly it would just be games that were bought and sold before the PS3 came to market. Where is their motivation to sink time and money into this? Especially when they're already bleeding money like Sony is.

Sony needs to make money and BC just isn't part of the moneymaking equation. Obviously there isn't enough demand for BC. If there were, Sony would find a way.

What's funny is, is the fact this takes up more space were ever you put it. Compare in that picture, which is size accurate. The slim is 1" smaller lengthwise, but a square, so width takes up even more. Only plus side is it's thinner, but does that even matter? you usually aren't pressed for vertical space. Though this design is more pleasing to look at in my opinion.

320mm * 95mm *270mm - old

290mm * 65mm * 290mm - new

Just measured the base on the old PS3. Take that, but make it a square from it's length size, and you have the PS3 slim. Well add 1mm the base is 289mm.

Cross-posting from another forum, didn't take into account portabalizing there, but that's the only thing it;s really good for.

All of the 7th generation consoles are marketed as being vertical consoles. Most people have their systems upright, so I think this would be a plus. It is a lot easier to tuck something in upright than stacking it.

Good point, but this design isn't, unless you want to pay $24 for the vertical stand...

If my PS3 had BC, I wouldnt need to keep my PS2, more room and less controllers to store. 4 PS2 controllers is actually quite a lot of room to hold.

Plus, the controllers would be first-party wireless, something the PS2 didn't offer.

Again... From a business standpoint it makes no sense. BC is just something that costs companies money. I don't blame them at all for dropping support of it. Sony isn't doing well financially, so anything they can do to save them money is to their benefit.

At a certain point as a company you need to draw a line in the sand. The PS3's primary purpose is to play PS3 games and secondary to that is Blu-ray. These are the two reasons why I bought a PS3 and I'm sure the majority of PS3 owners bought theirs for the same reasons.

I can understand where you're coming from with regards to BC, but at the end of the day it's not like Sony is making it so those games can never be played again. You can still play them quite easily by hooking up your PS2.

People who care about BC are a small (but vocal) part of the overall gaming population. These companies can only cater to them for so long before they need to cut the cord so to speak.

If you want backwards compatibility and a PS3, get the other version. It's pretty simple.
