I don't drive it, but my parents do. (Not a picture of ours, by the way, but it's just like it.)

When I can drive, I'd like to get a Subaru. Lots of people in our family have had them (my Mom, Dad, two Uncles, my cousin, and my grandparents had two) and they all loved them. They're just about perfect for what I'd need, too - room for friends or whatever crap I want to pile into one, safe and pretty efficient, reliable, cheap to buy, maintain, and insure, and they have AWD, which my Mom is insisting I get a car with for safety reasons. (Winter roads out here can get nasty.) Wouldn't be terrible for off-road driving, at least!

Yeah, station wagons are awesome. Lots of room in the back for stuff and good economy without looking like a soccer mom (minivan), predator (regular van), hippie (Prius), or d-bag (Hummer).

They scoot pretty well too, especially if you get one with a good engine. As Jeremy Clarkson said about hot hatchbacks, "You can put a chest of drawers in the back, then take it home at a million miles an hour".

That would probably explain why my Dad kept his for years and years, then he sold it for $250 and someone else got to drive it around. Wouldn't surprise me if it still ran...

My volvo wagon hit 112MPH on the way to MGC 2 years ago, with 3 people and all our stuff in the car its appx 150hp and a low 16 second car bone stock, turbo FTW

... it would have had a 1.3 litre over head valve engine fitted originally - maybe 65bhp? But that's a tweaked 16v twin cam engine from a mid 1990's Vauxhall (GM) Calibra with about 170bhp... doesn't sound a lot, but the car only weighs 800kg!

I also drive an 2005 Alfa Romeo 147 diesel turbo for the day-to-day commuting, it's got nothing on the other two, but it's still reasonably nippy (0-60 in 8.5 seconds) and gets a solid 50mpg no matter how soft or hard I drive it.

FYI - AWD tends to have a negative impact on mileage, so while I agree with most of the items on your list, I wouldn't call them fuel-efficient. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2001 Forester, and have no plans on ever owning a car without AWD now (unless it's like a second or third car ), but it only gets around 21-23 MPG. From what I've read, the newer ones (which are bigger and I don't like nearly as much), get a bit less and the Outback with it's V6 isn't that great either. So my recommendation would be an Impreza hatchback if you want the MPGs.

I drove a '91 Buick Century for about 6 years, at the end of high school and all through college. Put about 80,000 miles on her. Still running, but my brother has it since I upgraded.

I now have an '03 Buick Century (what can I say? I like the things), but I don't have any pictures of her handy. You know what they look like anyway... old person cars

I've also got a '99 Olds version of those, the Delta 88 - great-riding cars, plenty of power thanks to GM's beautiful 3.8.

I think my family has y'all beat as far as mileage goes.

1993 Mercury Villager, nearing 300,000 km on it. 296,000 right now or so I think. Pictures if there's interest.

I didn't realize we were comparing mileages - the 80,000 miles I put on it were in addition to the 105,000 it had on it to start. It's closing in on 200,000 now.

That puts it in second place in our family behind the 230,000 mile beast that is our Sunbird.

My Century just crested 90,000 miles - lots of life left in her.

i got ALL you beat. the odometer in my golf (posted earlier) BROKE at 285,000miles. about 5 years or so ago.

my odometer in the volvo stopped at 197,010, and that was when i got the car, so estimated it had over 200,000 miles on it when i got it, and i put at least 20-30,000 on it in 2 years . here is what i will be driving (until we sell it) until i get my BMW fixed
