Wisdom tooth pain! >_<

Post by Aguiluz » Tue May 12, 2009 10:08 pm

So I have a wisdom tooth pushing and shoving it's way put on the lower-right corner. It really darn hurts! Every time I talk, it hurts. Every time I sneeze, it hurts even more. Eating is a chore with this pain, and Tylenol (extra strength) helped only a little while (like, I can't use it during the day). Soaking it in warm salty water helped - for ten seconds.

Now I'm out of ideas and I'm wide awake even if it's 12:04 here. Any help? Tips? Crap? Anything?

I even considered grinding up a Tylenol tablet and using it as a mouthwash.

See if you can get your wisdom teeth removed?
Get some of that numbing stuff that you put on babys' gums when their teeth are coming in.

Oragel. It's great stuff. My back baby teeth never came out properly. No matter how much I wiggled them, they didn't loosen. So the adult teeth started pushing through the baby teeth, eventually the baby tooth became almost like a crown. Well, when those things broke and there were bits stuck next to the permanent teeth, that stuff was a lifesaver.

Just don't get it on your tongue.

Yeah if you're having problems with your wisdom teeth, it's best to have them removed. However, Orajel is a good fix for now. It won't eliminate the problem, but at least you'll be able to talk and chew again.

Ya I was having problems with mine about a month or two ago. One of my upper left teeth were hurting really bad for no reason, figured it was a cavity but the dentist couldn't find anything wrong with said tooth, took some xrays and realized its cause of my wisdom teeth. Mine come out July 26.

As for the pain I was in agony for about a week. Tylenol extra strength works for about 15 seconds. I was popping vicodin for about a week before the pain just magically stopped (maybe I'm perma-high now lol)

I stand by my theory that wisdom teeth are beneficial. Removing them is going to end up like having tonsils removed.
Hey, sup?

Even when they're causing agony? Most peoples' jaws aren't big enough to accommodate the extra 4 teeth. (Steven Tyler, on the other hand, must have a whole spare set in there.)
Removing them is going to end up like having tonsils removed.
Removing the source of a chronic problem?

Because you had them removed, or because they haven't developed yet? :P

I agree that they are beneficial. Or at least they were, centuries ago when we didn't have modern dentistry. Think about it. Your average human is going to live to about 30~35, and will lose plenty of teeth due to fighting, accidents, and just plain neglect. Those extra chompers sure would come in handy when your 25 and can't chew your food anymore .

In this day and age though, just get those suckers removed. I had three out in one day, and kept the last one. It wasn't bad at all, besides not be able to eat solid food like Triton said. The pain after the operation is probably not as bad as what you're going through now. And if you get put under during the operation, its easy.

He could be like my Dad and just never had any. It does happen. Hopefully I inherited that gene.

Right; x-rays show I have no trace of any wisdom teeth. Probably got it from my dad, who only had one. :P

They are more or less an evolutionary leftover. We don’t need them; we did at one point but not now. The human jaw has gotten smaller and smaller as our diet has transitioned away from tough vegetation, and now too small for extra teeth.

I have the same problem, in the same part of my jaw. Every dentist I've seen refuses to do anything until they've completely come in. In my case, it's painful, raw, and bloody for two weeks, then I'm fine for several months. It's been like this for five or six years, but no one will do anything because they're still coming in. Orajel is amazing stuff, but I can't get it to the problem spot without getting it all over my tongue and cheek.
This post brought to you by David Duchovny's glorious nipples.

Interesting story about Oragel. True too.

This guy was squirting a tube of something into his mouth.
Me: What is that stuff?
Guy: Oral gel.
Me: As in... lubrication?
Guy: No, it numbs my mouth because I have braces so they don't hurt.
Me: Oh thank god.
It goes on...

In any case, to justify my post, just get the suckers pulled out. It's more like an appendix than tonsils in that it's an evolutionary leftover that serves no real purpose anymore.
