Before websites that reviewed games, we had to buy games based on word-of-mouth and what was on the box. As such, we have all ended up with some pretty bad games.
That said, I have looked at reviews for some of my favorite old games, only to find that they received very poor reviews. I didn't know they were bad games until then!
Using Gamespot for my reviews, here's my list:
- Cybertiger (N64) : 3.8 out of 10
- Sarge's Heroes (N64) : 4.2 out of 10
- Crus'n World (N64) : 5.9 out of 10
- Demolition Racer (PS) : 6.4 out of 10
- Diddy Kong Racing (N64) : 6.6 out of 10
What supposedly 'terrible' games did you love to play?

Do they have to be old?
If not, I have alone in the dark for the 360 and it got some worse reviews than I thought.

Pokemon Stadium 2 did not have stellar reviews. However, I loved that game to death.
Also, did you know that IGN gave pokemon yellow a perfect 10.0?

Excellent

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night (PS2)
Got a 3.5 on IGN. You know why? Because they say it is too difficult and the reviewer soon gave up the game. There was another review that gave it a 4/10 on a forum I used to go. Same reason: The reviewers were so blown by the game's difficulty and gave it low marks. Heck, one of them had headaches playing it.
I loved it. I took 3 days to pass a single section of the whole level. (It was that hard.)

Gamespot did a little better and gave it a 5.0, calling it "frustrating" and "unoriginal."
I think I have the previous one, A New Beginning ( 5.8 ), but I haven't played it yet.

I don't really care about the reviews. The storyline/plot is awesome.

I think the trick is this: figure out what 'negatives' don't bother you. The best way to do this is to look at poorly-rated games you enjoy. Based on that, you can usually pick out a pattern.
For example, these are not negatives to me:
- "short" : Unless it's really, really short, I don't care. I don't have 60 hours to play one game. Plus, the length almost always ignores multiplayer modes.
- "lacks multi-player" : While this can be a knock on a game, plenty of good games don't have/need multi-player.
- "unoriginal" : If it copies good games, it can be pretty good too. Plus, I may not have played the game it is cloning. How different can you really make a racing game that people will play?
- "easy" : Obviously, if we are talking about a kid's game, that's one thing, but I don't want to have to go online to figure out how to get past a point. Having a stupidly confusing puzzle or hidden location is a poor/easy way to pace and lengthen the game.
</my thoughts>

DJMAX Portable is a Beatmania clone. I loved the music tracks and the gameplay. Didn't play Beatmania. It didn't catch wind here in North America unfortunately and Konami is sueing DJMAX.eagle5953 wrote:- "unoriginal" : If it copies good games, it can be pretty good too. The first one that comes to mind is "Carmageddon" for the N64. Apparently it was one of the lowest rated N64 games of all time, but I found that its ridiculousness was what made it so great!
Wikipedia wrote:The Nintendo 64 port was ill-received, being N64 Magazine's lowest rated game at 8% from 1999 till 2004. The magazine encouraged gamers to "take it off the shelves, rip up the box and throw the cart repeatedly at the wall until it breaks"

Yeah its good, I'm not a fan of the controls and the whole movie style skipping thing, but its a good game overallAfroLH wrote:Oniak wrote:SameAfroLH wrote:Do they have to be old?

It's the second worst game on Gamespot, only above the universally reviled Superman 64.sgtpepper wrote:The first one that comes to mind is "Carmageddon" for the N64. Apparently it was one of the lowest rated N64 games of all time, but I found that its ridiculousness was what made it so great!

I don't have to bother posting review scores, the statement alone explains it all. Every new Sonic game except for Sonic 06 (haven't played it) and Sonic Riders: Zero gravity (played it, sold it, piece of crap). I think they're all just wonderful. In fact, the first Sonic game I even played was Adventure 2: Battle for the GameCube, and as much as I enjoyed the old games after I played them, I also love the new games. Even Shadow the Hedgehog.

Definitely Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.
