Millions and millions of tech blogs

Post by Life of Brian » Wed Apr 01, 2009 8:35 am

I was curious. I know that there are a bajillion tech blogs out there that quite often feature projects made by us forum members (usually giving credit to just Ben Heckendorn or just saying "a Ben Heck forum member") so I decided to do a Google search for just "portable SNES" to see if some of my own work would show up. I thought it would be fun if everyone searched for their own projects on Google and posted their finds here.

This is what I was able to find with ONE SEARCH!

^Ha ha! This guy refers to me as "Portablizer" - I guess he saw my avatar...

I quit looking for links at this point. It's awesome that these folks found my projects newsworthy, but also kind of weird being discussed about without knowing it or finding out about it months and months later ಠ_ಠ

Ha ha ha! I was hoping you'd post that, Marshall!

I often see Turbo Tax's and Rekarp's work go uncredited on many of the same sites. The lesson I have learned from all of this is that I am going to start slapping my name on every single picture I post and on my videos too. Some sites like TechEBlog rehosted some of my videos, and edited out my name at the beginning and end of the video and put music over my commentary! Gah!

It's kind of fun to go through the links and read what seems to be practically the same "press release" word for word on different sites. Basically it boils down to a larger blog posting an initial story and the rest just copy and pasting into their own articles, not even bothering to follow any links to the original source (these forums, often) to make sure the information is accurate or to even credit who made it. Some are better than others, however - it's not like I'm blasting them all. Just some...

I know what you mean. The IQ of most commenters are slightly less horrible than Youtube. The next time I build a N64 portable, I'm putting a GIANT "This is the Z button, not the L button" caption on the photo. And guaranteed there will be people asking "there's no Z button!!"

I haven't had anything straight up lifted or altered. Yet. It's hilarious how all the small blog sites steal all their news from the bigger ones that actually do the "reporting". Who's gonna read those crappy blogs anyway? LOL

Ultimately it all comes down to ad revenue for most of these sites. They don't care who made it, I doubt the readers care either. It's just traffic for them.

Perhaps it might be prudent to start a new topic that is just the finished portable. Just pictures and your own "press release" of sorts. Oh, and a link to the build thread for those who are actually interested in that. That might help with the misinformation aspect.

Just a thought.

What frustrates me, Kyle, is that is exactly what I do. Oh well.

All in the news section:

http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=21814
http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=25304
http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=22131
^I've got a few more topics in the news section, but they're not portables.

Here's an interesting side note - I did a bit of complaining on TechEBlog about the edited, rehosted video and I actually got a response!
Hello Brian,

This is Joe here, one of TechEBlog's moderators, and I'd like to apologize for not providing the proper credit where due. Please let us know via email (contact @ techeblog.com) next time you see missing credit, and we'll fix it right away. Readers routinely send in videos and/or pictures that are pre-edited by themselves, attached to emails. without listing the original creator. I have updated the posts and credited you properly.

Best Regards,
Joe
My response:
Wow! I wasn't expecting a response, but I certainly appreciate it! Thank you very much. Tell you what - next time I release pictures and video of a new project, I'll be sure to send you the links and insider info about the project myself. Thank you!

-Brian

I followed your links, and yes, that IS exactly what you do. There's no reason for people to get the facts all tangled. Sloppy journalism.
