Not a completely stupid question. Surfaces without enough texture will make optical mice lose track all the time. While the rough surface on most mousepads (which was designed to make the balls grip on ball mice) coincidentally works great as a tracking surface, that customer's precaution wasn't stupid.
Yes, but this was a situation where I knew the customer didn't know USB from UPS... You know the people - the ones who have you over to their house to set up their (completely color-coded) new computer.

I've worked in retail long enough to differentiate the clueless from the too-clever-by-half.

Optical mice will not work well on mousepads with little texture, granted, but they typically will work to some extent on any surface except glass.

All these years later, the phrase "chip smashers" make me grin.

I move that Chip Smashers be either minions or a level boss in Palmertech's game "Project LASER."

Chip smashers is awesome. It's funny how people make stuff up with no base to it.

Me: Yeah I just opened up my xbox 360 to fix an rrod.
My friend: Wait what about the chip smashers?!
Me:... There aren't any chip smashers.
My friend: Oh really? But I read online that there were.
Me:.... No.

Re: ChipSmashers.

Ben's 360 on some forums.
I don't have time to read the article, but I must know: how does he get past the chip smashers?

CM
I think he just rationalizes them out of existence.
Hey, sup?

Me: I'm going to attempt a N64p
Friend: Cool, What are you going to do afterwards
Other friend: He should make a Xbox 360 laptop
Me: No.
Friend: Why?
Me: Because I am not God
Other frend: Also cause of the chip smashers
Me: The what?! *Head*Table*
Other friend: Yeah, I read about them on the internet
Me: You do realize that they don't exist right?
Friend: Besides, the internet is not the best place to get info
Other Friend: Yes it is
Me: No it is not. Tell ya what, go call microsoft and ask them about it
Other Friend: Ok *walks off with Cell Phone out*
Me: I bet microsoft hangs up on him.

The only idiot of my friends
I haven't been here in awhile, and looking back it's one of the worst ideas I ever had. I'm back and I'll be here for awhile, I was quite active 1 year ago and I hope to become that again.

In the future, if anyone here becomes an exec at any major company, put chip smashers in your products.
Please.

I would, on the bottom, put:

Warning: Warranty will be voided upon opening of the unit. Opening the unit may cause the chip smashers to activate, causing the unit to not function properly.

I wish my freind were stupid sometimes.

Although, at one time I had someone tell me I didn't build my n64p, and my little brother did because he wears glasses. That was just plain weird. Although ironically, I have never once insulted my bro for it. Maybe that is a good thing?
