Question about a soldering iron(Pencil type)

Post by endrien » Fri Feb 13, 2009 5:15 am

Im looking for a cheap soldering iron so the first place I checked was ebay, and I found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... TQ:US:1123
I was wondering if the tips on it are replaceable as the seller doesn't know.
I can't really tell because all I've owned was that crap cold heat, but it looks like they are, and if so where would I get replacement tips?

How 'bout Radio Shack? Their soldering irons are about $8, you don't need to wait for shipping, and the tips are replacable?

To be honest I don't think we have a radioshack here.

What about a hardware store? We (Oklahomans) have Westlake Ace Hardware stores here and they all carry quite a few soldering type items like irons, flux, tips, solder, etc.

Since there's screws (multiple screws? WTF?), it should be replaceable. The guy selling it in twain probably doesn't know anything about it.

This one's cheap, from a legit store (not some random place in Taiwan that doesn't know the difference between welding and soldering), and has replaceable tips. Harbor Freight has decent stuff.

Don't even bother with a cheap iron. I've had two so far, and they don't last. Spend $30 and buy a decent Weller, Hakko, or other brand.

A generic $8 RadioShack Iron is what I use. Just get a few replacable tips and it will last you awhile.

Radio Shack has replacement tips, too. Now it's just a question of if they ship to Canadialand

I second that. I used to only buy cheap $10 ones. I'd need a new one every 3 months or so. Then I decided I would try a Weller. It cost $25 or so. It's been at least half a year and it's still running as good as ever. It's definitely worth the price, whatever way you look at it.

As a side note:

Sometimes people forget to turn off their soldering irons, and they're left on overnight. With the cheap ones, it was always like "OH SHIZ IT PROLLY BURNT OUT", and that was usually the case. Overnight = dead. With the weller, I haven't had that problem yet.
