I wrote an entire DOS-esque environment on my TI 99/4A pc in middle school, complete with text editor and startup routines. I think it's still saved on a cassette somewhere.

But yet you're using Opera... The closest you can get to FireFox without using FireFox, but still having to pay for it.

Switch to links with framebuffer image rending if you want no GUI. It's nearly impossible to get less mainstream than that.

Curious, what 'lies' are being spread with/by FireFox as mentioned in your sig's image?

You can't go better than your own handmade shell. I wrote one in Basic when I was 12 that did a file list to the screen, read the screen, put the currently selected file in reverse (black on white), and then you could move around which file to be selected. Hit enter and the program would figure out what to do with based on extension (.com and .exe got shelled out, .bas got loaded into memory and run)
Hmmm....can I get that Shell from you? I'd like to try it on my laptop. ^^

I'll see if I can find the CD that has the backup of the Zip disk that contained the backup of the 3 1/2" floppy that had a backup of the orginal 5 1/4".

It has a couple of draw-backs that I never corrected:
1. no directory support, as it didn't really matter as I was loading off a 360K floppy.
2. if the file list is bigger than the screen, you won't be able to select the first files listed (as it read off the screen).

I was working on #2, but I forget how far I got into it when we got our 486 with Windows. (making the program obsolete) I also vaguely recall trying to make a Windows 3.1 clone not long after the shell. I even had ideas on how to make an API set.

I'd have to check my old tapes. Even then, there's no way to get it into an emulator, except for having a 99/4a and another tape. You'd have to get a WAV file and put it on the tape.

to tell the truth, you're the first person I have seen who knows what the 99/4a is.

I have had several of them. Had the speech synthisizer and about 20 carts and a few tapes for them as well. Problem is I can't find the carts now. :( I wanna play Star Trek and Tunnels of Doom: Quest for the King.

There's no wav to cassette image converter for TI emulators? I know there are for TRS-80 Color Computers, I dumped my old tapes into my PC using a walkman.

I take you guys are into old computer stuff then, I might see if I can find my old programs for both PC and CoCo2. Most of it isn't very good, considering I was 15 at the oldest.

I could try to port it into QuickBASIC.

CRAP I OWN FOR THE 99/4A:

RS232 interface
Printer
2 Tape cables
2 RF Modulators
2 99/4A's (one died)
a ton of ads, lessons, and flyers (even the one with Cosby on the cover pointing to the boot screen
Extra keyboard layouts
a cassette tape with old programs my Dad wrote in the early 1980's

I got all this for free from my grandfatrher, who used to work at TI.

If you have it for QuickBasic, can I get it from you?

I'd need to write it first! :) Then, I guess I'd upload it to my much-neglected website.
