9800 gtx
Moderator:Moderators
So I picked up this card at launch a month or so ago.
And its pretty nice, but not as powerful as I had hoped.
Had anyone else got the same video card? Or the 9800 gx2 model?
If so, hows it run?
This cards runs pretty darn hot. That's why I am a little afraid to overclock too much.
Anyone have two of these in sli?
Im interested to see how they would compare to just one of them.
Thanks!

The 9800GTX is essentially a clock-tweaked 512mb 8800 GTS (the new model, not the old 320 and 640mb versions), so it's pretty underpowered for the price. The GX2 on the other hand is a monstrously fast card, but it's absolutely huge, power hungry and hot running. Often they will overheat and crash if they do not have a side panel fan blowing directly onto them. That said, if your case has decent air flow, you'll be OK.
As for running 2 98GTXs in SLI, I'd imagine they'd be similar to a GX2, as a GX2 is basically 2 GTX cores on one PCB with a SLI bridging chip. A single GX2 is cheaper and less power hungry, so if you're in the market for a really high end card, then the GX2 is a better buy, IMHO.
Hope this is useful

I already have the 9800 gtx, so if I was to upgrade it would mean buying another 9800 gtx. Well I doubt its just a tweaked 8 series card, I mean it has a new gpu, but i have heard they are in the same power range.

I am still running a 7900GT. Beast of a card for the price I paid a few years back ($250). Plays Bioshock with everything in full without a hiccup. Crysis kicks it in the junk tho.
The 9800 GTX is basically a optimized 8800 GTS. It runs on the same architecture but runs at a faster speed. More info at the following link.

My main desktop is running a 9200, and the HTPC a 2600 Pro. Both do what I need, though the HTPC could use a better processor than the existing 3.2 gig Celery.
EDIT
EDIT
Aww, ya got me. Yeah, 128 MB Radeon 9200. It can handle plenty of stuff, and the HTPC actually had a 9250 SE in it before and it could run NFS:Carbon. (It looked like an early PSone game but it ran! )TheOnlyOneHeFears wrote:9200? As in Radeon 9200? But if it does what you need, then fair does

The 98GTX's codename is G94, the codename for the 8800 GTS is G92, meaning they come from the same production line, and are to all intents and purposes from the same family of GPUs. Like Rekarp said, the architecture is the same, but the core and the stream processors run faster.
If you want to play Crysis in High detail at anything above 1280x960, you need a GX2, it's the only card that can run Crysis in 1680x1200 with a smooth frame rate. 30fps ain't half bad though

Yeah I have a decent rig.
6 gigs of ram (yes totally superfluous, but just saying it sounds cool)
Duo core, 2.66 over clocked stable to around 3 ghz.
Obviously the 9800 gtx
A sceptre 24 inch monitor with a decent contrast of 4000:1
I was thinking about getting a quad core.
Worth it?

Nice set up, you could get a Q6600, it's the cheapest quad-core processor out there at the moment (I think). If you buy the G0 stepping, you can overclock it to 3.4Ghz plus just with an air cooler, so for the money, it's pretty awesome. It depends what you want to do with your system, your set up at the moment is pretty beastly.
Thanks.
For nerds it always nice to be complemented on your computer
My price rang was up to 400 for the processor
I also wanted a new psu.
Heres the processor i was eye balling

Jesus, I wish I had your funds
That processor is immense, just looking at the comments, seems some people have got it up to 4Ghz plus
As for a power supply, I'd recommend either the Enermax Galaxy 1000 Watt supply (here) or the Antec TruePower Quattro 850 Watt (here), they'll both give you more than enough power. The Enermax has a long case though, which might be a bit awkward. What case do you have?

My "gaming" computer is currently a 2.4Ghz P4 and a rockin' Radeon X1600. It can do Oblivion OKish with the settings toned down (1024x768) and Bioshock runs okish with no enemies on screen (1024x768 also). Built my friend a computer in December with an E6550 and 8600GTS, and it runs Bioshock perfectly at 1280x1024. I'm currently in the process of building a computer for another friend with a penryn Q9300 and a 9800GTX with a female of the dog species' 24" Samsung monitor. According to various reviews and such, we can expect ~30fps @1920x1200 on Crysis with a mild overclock. Also planning on building a more modest set up for myself later this summer. A GX2 would be nice, but they are wicked expensive.

Im only a kid working on minimum wage man. Just not a saver
Yeah Im just curious if i will really see that much of a difference in games with a quad core.
My case is this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811156062
And life is better with ketchup, I wouldnt plan on getting that high of an fps with a 8600.
I had one for a short period, it barely could handle COD4.
My 9800 gtx handles Crysis with an average of 30 fps settings on high, no AA
at 1900x1200 with the card overclocked to about 725 mhz. Good luck with a 8600 XD.
