What should I charge? (Web Design)

Post by khaag » Thu Feb 21, 2008 4:56 pm

A teacher at my school was looking for someone to design a site for his other business, a fitness/acceleration gym. He was going to go to a design firm here where I live, but he said he'd rather pay someone he knows. He approached me, and now I have the job. So, what do you think I should charge him for my services? I don't want to charge too high, but I also want to make it worth my while. Since this is for a commercial business, I don't know what to charge! What do you guys think? It should be around 10 pages, with some flash integration, and full template design, and I will be filling it with all the content (He's providing it).

So what do you guys think?

Well, like any professional, I suppose you should come up with an estimate of how long it's going to take and then derive an hourly amount from that. If it takes longer than you expected, then you're still earning what your time is worth.

You could charge what you would want to pay someone to do web design for yourself. Also remember, don't ovecharge people. Thats not a nice thing to do.

I stick with a service plan - for five bucks, someone can just use my resources and use them to make their own website, despite hosting and content and whatever (yea, for five bucks I let people get away with a lot of crap but hey it's making some money). Or for ten dollars you will do what they want under their "guidance" (just to make sure the design goes how they want it, etc).

It's not too bad, and people don't think it's OUTRAGEOUS or anything.

Hmm... 10 pages, flash... probably around $750. That's probably about what my company would charge. Though, it has a lot to do how much updating is needed. If you would need to be changing stuff on it every week, we'd charge a good amount more. But, if it was basically just "design and host", $750 or maybe at the lowest $500 sounds fair. We usually do year-long contracts. We charge them a higher amount for the first year, since it includes the "initial" design, then we will negotiate on payment for the preceding years. Actually, we're quite new, so our first paying client hasn't quite reached the second year yet. She's almost there, though.

We specialize in Standardbred horse sites; it's kind of a niche market. See, horses and technology don't exactly go together like bread and butter, but as technology grows, even farmers and such see the benefit to having a website. The problem? Nobody at a web design firm is gonna know ANYTHING about horses, but my mother grew up in a family of Standardbred owners, and I know stuff about computers... so that's where we come in. :P

$500 minimum!? I feel totally jipped off now, I charged under $200 for both of these:

www.EvanAndJessesToys.com
If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

I don't know if I want to charge that much though since he's a teacher of mine. Maybe $200 would be good.

Haha, hey Josh, I think you got a pretty good deal for 50 bucks ;) ( http://neoconyouth.com )
