I was dissapointed when dropping the small portal through a larger one didn't lead to the destruction of the universe :(

I fail to see why this is so shocking. Every other Valve game has been open-source. Portal has so much potential for this sort of thing, I don't see how they COULDN'T do this!

Also worth thnking about: Portal guns in games like TF2.

Read closer; it's not Valve's Portal that's open source.

It's a hobbyist coder making his own engine, called Portalized. I've seen earlier versions of it, it's pretty neat how he combines a packaged physics engine with some multiple-viewpoint rendering.
