I got a couple guppies at the beginning of the summer, one of them died a few months ago and I replaced it with a neon tetra, which died, and I later found out that tetras won't last very long in a bowl. Last week I got a platy because I didn't know the sex of my guppy and didn't want them to breed (I now know it is male). Yesterday I noticed my guppy's tailfin was nearly gone, and I didn't know if it was tailrot or nipping (because I also noticed that the platy was nipping at my guppy) so I separated them.
But now his tail is gone even more which makes me think it might be tailrot. I've read that their fins naturally grow back but I don't know if it will now that so much of it is gone.
I know platys are supposed to be community fish but I have heard of them nipping at other fish. But I don't think some nipping would cause this much damage. I figure if it was that guppy disease (the name of which I don't know) Jerry Seinfeld (guppy's name) would be dead by now.
What do you think the cause of this is and do you think his tail will grow back?

From what I read, it could be a bacterial infection. (The single-celled organism, not the PDA/GP2X modder.) You could get some antibiotics from the vet. If that's the problem, the tail should grow back after the infection's cleared up.
