Anyone here know about fish (guppies in particular)

Post by Edutainment » Sat Dec 29, 2007 9:16 am

I got a couple guppies at the beginning of the summer, one of them died a few months ago and I replaced it with a neon tetra, which died, and I later found out that tetras won't last very long in a bowl. Last week I got a platy because I didn't know the sex of my guppy and didn't want them to breed (I now know it is male). Yesterday I noticed my guppy's tailfin was nearly gone, and I didn't know if it was tailrot or nipping (because I also noticed that the platy was nipping at my guppy) so I separated them.

But now his tail is gone even more which makes me think it might be tailrot. I've read that their fins naturally grow back but I don't know if it will now that so much of it is gone.

I know platys are supposed to be community fish but I have heard of them nipping at other fish. But I don't think some nipping would cause this much damage. I figure if it was that guppy disease (the name of which I don't know) Jerry Seinfeld (guppy's name) would be dead by now.

What do you think the cause of this is and do you think his tail will grow back?

From what I read, it could be a bacterial infection. (The single-celled organism, not the PDA/GP2X modder.) You could get some antibiotics from the vet. If that's the problem, the tail should grow back after the infection's cleared up.

Thanks bicostp. I'm going to Big Al's (fish place) right now. Maybe I'll ask someone there about it.

ahem. are in a BOWL! and they are tropical, make sure you have a heater set to correct temperature (no, a soldering iron will not work!) and a air pump and filter. if not then get a tank and buy at least a heater and filter. and use another pet shop, the fish may have disease in that one.

They're just guppies. They're not that sensitive to temperature/pH levels unless breeding.

Oh, and I got that Melafix stuff. I started the treatment a couple days ago.

Goldfish bowls make fish blind or screw up their vision forever or something.

Just curious, but how much was that tablet you have? I first became curious when I saw it in a picture of your Christmas presents, under your iPod. :?

If it was a gift or you just don't know, then no problem. I've looked at them before and the ones I saw were like $500+ :(

No this is just a cheap one, but it works great for my needs. I'm pretty sure it's about $70.

Is it a Wacom? Because that's what I have and it was about $80.
Why is it that every time I post in a thread, it dies?
