Looking to buy a laptop. Need some advice.

LONG LINK!
I'm looking at this laptop. Is this a good bang for the buck? I don't plan on playing games with it. I'd mainly be using it for photoshop, video editing, 3d studio max, and watching movies.

No. If you're doing 3D stuff or video stuff (both of which you are), you're going to need dedicated graphics. The MacBook has just Intel Integrated Graphics (ew), so that wouldn't fit your needs.legoboy wrote:Go for a MacBook.

Exactly why I'm not going with a Macbook. I can get a much more powerful computer for less money. With Mac, you're paying for the name.
Can anybody offer any suggestions as to the laptop I originally asked about?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing.
I'm looking at buying an HP or a Compaq, but why are they bad? Compaq's look like they have good specs, and they can have Core 2 Duo... I thought that was a good thing? Or is it just the price that's bad?

If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.
Okay, my dad's HP crashed all the time...now it wont even get passed the BIOS and the BIOS are so screwy.
Now my Dell on the other hand has only had one problem and thats that the Hard Drive failed but thats not Dell's fault, it's mine for playing games 24/7.
I think Dell has some of the best customer support too, I told them the Hard drive failed and they had a guy some from Maryland just to install a new, better hard drive (WD is better than Segate in my opinion)
As for FPS Creator, screw it and learn a real programming language.

Concerning HP laptops:
My school includes a laptop in the tuition for all incoming students. My class all got HP Compaq nw8240's. At least 50% of them have had the batteries die, mine has died twice. Now, maybe there was a bad batch of batteries, that HP refuses to acknowledge, but when people go through two to three batteries in two years, that tells me there's something faulty in the charging circuits or something. And you can't call it an isolated incident when there are thousands of laptops involved.
Additionally, a friend of mine got a HP laptop before he went to college. The motherboard has died twice already in the past two years.
Not to mention, battery aside, I haven't really been satisfied with the performance of the laptop. I keep the hard drive clean, run monthly defrags, clear out temporary files and caches, etc, and it's still slow and laggy a lot. The wireless radio is a pain, and having had experience with the same radio in other laptops my guess is it has to do with the antenna location/positioning and not the radio itself. Overall it hasn't been a fun trip, which is why I plan to get a MacBook Pro this fall.
My $0.02..
