What happen? (Someone set us up the crash)

Post by benheck » Mon Apr 16, 2007 1:11 pm

The PS3 controller thing was on Digg yesterday and the traffic crashed this site. Again. So I've upgraded to a better plan.

The site is back up at the moment, not sure if it's on the new server yet or not, but for best results take it easy on the forums / downloads / whatever for a day or two to lessen the risk of crashing it again before the new server is a done deal.

-Ben

PS: There you go.

You should take the past tense suffix out of the the thread title so we can make Zero Wing references in here.

Agreed.

I thought Ben already had "unlimited bandwidth"... So what did he upgrade to?

Yes I thought my last plan woud solve this problem, and was told that it would. Not terribly happy, to be honest.

I checked the stats, it crashed yesterday with 17,000 ish unique visitors and about half a million hits. This may sound like a lot but the average daily hits is 200k and visitors is about 3-6 thousand. Suffice to say, we've suffered bigger storms than that before it crashed, usually the stats would be in the hundreds of thousands of uniques when it went offline.

Anyway HOPEFULLY this new plan will cover anything (like the old one was supposed to) It's supposed to be faster too, though I have a feeling the site isn't actually on it yet. So don't put anything super-critical in the forums because it might get lost.

Bandwidth allowance maybe, but still there's only so much traffic one server can handle at a time.

Jeez, with the new plan's probable cost, you'd probably be better off leasing a fiber connection for your house and run a cluster of Xserves in your basement...

Present tense Zero Wing references can still be possible with exaggerated Engrish. Digg is stealing /.'s significance in the site crashing sectors. Damned kids!

Infinite Improbability Plan YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your bandwidth can be everywhere at once. Hehe.

So, you got Digged huh. That is a crazy amount of hits. I would have thrown up an ad too. You could probably retire just off it.

I guess it makes me wonder what kind of plan Dig and Hackaday have...? Or they just have their own fibers to blades.....(Gibsons)...

so why did it go down after 17k hits then? did they all happen in like 20 minutes? hm.

I have a good idea though. host all your images on imageshack. :D

actually, I think I heard that you can use flickr for about $30/month for unlimited bandwidth, and there is nothing that says you cannot host images for other sites. But yeah, Ben, please link the logo to the main page. Since the forums are in a new window, it seems too separated from the rest of the site.

Ben *could* always host all images at different mirrors, and then through an access file have all image requests get processed by a script that fetches the image from a random mirror. Not really necessary I think though :P
